Most of the time it is women you know, friends of the family or even family members (cousins, nieces and so on) and they are not working as models on any of the social medias or also not working as free lance media personalities on any of the social media formats.

It is mostly your run of the mill young ladies doing it and it has nothing to do with them being models or entertainers on social media.

Most of them are just craving attention and these girls wants to hear all the comments from the young men that are happy to shower them with compliments. I am not a selfie person. Actually, I don't take pictures at all. I can count on my two hands the number of pictures that has been taken of me in the last 20 years. I try to spare people the pain of looking.

Before there were "selfies", there were "self portraits".

When people say "selfie", there's a very particular asthethic they intend. Which is not the same as taking a photo of yourself.

I would say the statue doesn't depict the "Selfie" asthethic, it just looks like someone taking a photo with their friend.

yups! self portraits have been around for years.

Further, what does it matter who is taking the picture? The thing that matters is that you're the one in the picture.

Pretty silly to get worked up about it.
Ok...very silly

Then again, at least someone is at least giving SOME thought to how various taxpayer money is spent. 2/3 of the population doesn't even do that much

But yeah. Misguided.
They had anartbudget and spent some of this. That's all.

People Suck...Beer Good

Most beers suck as well...we just fool ourselves into thinking it taste great because it is cheaper than better forms of alcohol lol.

I remember when I was stationed in Korea.

At bars you had two choices of beer Bud or OB beer.

You drank Bud for the first few beers of the night...after your taste buds started to slack on the job you bought the cheaper OB beer to save money....especially if you were doing thunder runs.

I'd like to see a new trend develop: "selflessies" = People taking pictures of themselves helping someone else.

I'm anti-selfie to a very high level, but to get angry about a selfie statue tells you that people's focus is highly misplaced and they aren't intelligent to make decisions for themselves and much less for the country as a whole. It makes me cringe to think that some of this people might actually be registered voters.

To me, It looks like and obvious attempt to get attention by the creator of the statue. The whole concept of a selfie statue had to have been designed with the idea of trolling the easily riled up folks just waiting for the next thing to be outraged about. I wouldn't surprised if it even turns out that the artist did a little anonymous faux anger of a social media in order to get the ball rollin. Not that's we'll know. This story will vanish soon enough, and the poor put upon artist will have upped his local cred a bit.

I laughed.

Mainly because the guy who had it built is an idiot.

And there's a difference between taking a picture of yourself at something meaningful or cool. Who wants to look like an idiot in a picture they're going to post somewhere?

Too bad most "selfies" on social media are insecure cries for attention. My snapchat is full of girls that literally post double digit numbers of selfies or videos of themselves daily doing normal things.

"Hey look at this selfie with a halo of roses around my head while i do laundry." "Hey I'm watching TV, look at this post from a slightly different angle with the same halo" "Hey i've had 3 beers, look at this picture of me looking lustfully at the camera, and my hair tossed (because i just took the 20th snap and finally flipped my hair just right"

If you're a younger guy who isn't a shut in, you probably have a facebook feed of girls posting selfies or even profile pics of themselves in some awkward *** unreplicable lighting with a slight push up on their assets, that they only posted so they can get triple digit likes from guys who would hook up with a tree oozing sap if they had the opportunity.

I don't really get it. I wouldn't say it's an epidemic or anything, but it's definitely breeding narcissism and deep insecurity in the younger generation.

And if you're a father with a daughter of near drinking age that has Snapchat, God help you. I'd get a lifelong ban if i described a tenth of the things I've received on that stupid app.

Let's see ... who could we honor? Soldiers who fell on D-day? Astronauts on the moon? Someone who liberated slaves? Someone who invented a great medical treatment? Someone who protected voting rights? I've got it! Let's make a statue of teenagers taking selfies!

Duck face is sad. Wish someone would come up with something better instead of looking like some airhead kissing a camera in every picture.

Scarlett Johansson had the right idea a few years back...

The only problem with selfies is all the people in them.

Bingo, I went to high school with a girl who's always putting up selfies, and the extremely doctored selfies, where they make their skin look like a porcelain doll. It's like, I've seen you recently, you don't look like that, your 45.
She went on this 'rant' about all these young guys sending her pm.s, that could be her son and telling them to get a life. You were so upset and embarrassed you had to let the world know.

my first and last selfie was by accident. Was taking a picture of something else and I hit the wrong button on my camera and got me instead.

I dont get the fascination with Facebook, Selfies, instagram, twitter and what not. I have none of them. I dont get whey people have to tell others they are going to the store to get some eggs and milk. Seems like a waste of time. But I guess they would say the same thing about posting on a football message board.

I saw the youtube of the lady with the Star Wars Mask that could not stop laughing. The thing went viral and it was all over the radio and TV. Seriously? I guess I would have had to be there. I didnt get it. But I am old and more worried about people walking their dogs on my yard. Now thats important.

The lady in the mask most likely went viral because her enthusiasm was on par with a child of about 7-8 years old. I facepalmed when she pulled out the mask but when she laughed I had to laugh too because it was so stupid. Not sure what you find funny, but it is hard to believe that only a teeny tiny minority didn't find that video was funny.

intentionally or not, that's pretty apropos social-commentary, and she achieved a fairly common artist goal - getting people talking. Now if intentional, that's just damn clever.

As far as the idiocy of some of these selfies, well yeah, but there is a certain bit of "Get off my lawn" to it also. Communication is changing so rapidly - the latest thing I've gotten into our conversation is this strange behavior of <25 and younger in texting - almost every message starts off with "LOL" or "Haha" for no reason whatsoever. Check out your kid's phones, or anyone that age. Its funny (no pun intended)
