I sit week after week and wonder this...
One would think since our DB's are older/better now then we should be sending alot more blitz packages at these slow sorry @$$ QB's...
What's wrong, why aren't we "Hollin" like we did the year when we made the playoffs and loss to Carolina..?

Either that or Big Bill is just really, REALLY conservative. If I'm the Cowboy defenders I would be hollering in his ear to be turned loose. Then again, BP has them so scared of screwing up that they never risk anything. Crap.

We are starting a rookie FS.

We will blitz more as we get deeper into the season.

well i dont want us just to blitz, i want to also be creative when we are blitzing. dont make it obvious who is going to blitz, that is what has made the Steelers and Patriots 3-4 defenses over the years very dominant. because they just confuse you and that also causes a lot of turnovers

Because Mike Zimmer can't design an effective blitz to save his life. Every time we have blitzed under Zimmer's tenure our guys simply run into the blockers or their own guy in front of them.

We need to get pressure from our front-7 if we are going to have any success IMO.

Teams blitz because they cannot get pressure with their front four, or base packages. Ultimately, you;re going to pay for that, as we saw with that paper tiger 2003 team. There is no correlation between blitzing and defensive success. We don't blitz, because we don't need to.

This isn't to say a well-timed, well-executed blitz isn't a great weapon. Blitzng like we did in 03 is playing with fire, though. A defense that can get pressure with 4, or tops 5 players rushing is a very dangerous one. That's what we aspire to be. Even the best perceived blitzing teams aren't sending inordinate amounts of players. Teams like the Steelers will drop a lineman and send Porter, or another LB, only sending 4 or 5. The benefit comes in the confusion.

To be honest, those blitzes we saw in 03 where we sent the house scare the crap out of me.

And that's Zimmer's fault.

As I recall back in the day, Coach Landry said that at the time NYG(Parcells) were mostly a zone team maybe thats what we are really seeing with this scheme, I know our corners are locking down in man mostly but the rest of the scheme seems based on the old umbrella, with 4 pass rushers coming from a mix of the front 7. Thats exaclty Parcells MO folks. The heat you seek was LT and its yet to be proven that Ware has that moxie but he does show promise.

it's because Parcells doesn't believe in complex blitz schemes, he'd rather go head-up on you, and have his guys beat your guys, on D, same way he is on O

2 Reasons in my opinion:

1) The cowboys have been getting pretty decent pressure in their base packages, which means they can play more zone and limit the opponent's ability to move the ball effectively by forcing them to dump passes to their backs or throw the ball away. Against Jacksonville, the cowboys got pretty good pressure against Leftwhich but the corners gave up to many plays to the bigger receivers. In fact, I believe spagnola indicated that Jacksonville's halftime adjustment was to conduct a variety of short 3-step drop passes. I believe penalties really hurt the boys in that game.

2) The cowboys strategy is to limit opponent gains on 1st and 2nd down and blitz on 3rd and long. Why not blitz on every down?? Because, you could give up the big play or long gain. If your looking for better sack totals and turnovers, Demarcus Ware needs to provide the pass ruch out of the 3-4 package, he has been extremely close on a number of plays, I believe much like parcells it is just a matter of time.

We didn't have Ware back then, so you didn't have that threat that had to be accounted for on every down.

It seems to me that Parcells and Zimmer seemingly make up their mind whether or not they are going to blitz before each game and stick to that gameplan. It's great if it works reasonably well, but when it doesn't I'd like to see them be less afraid of making adjustments.

We have been blitzing a lot on 3rd and long situations. And I also think they may be a little averse to blitzing with rookie Pat Watkins at Free Safety.

But I would like to see more blitzing, especially from the ILB's and Roy.

When is everybody going to pay closer attention and realize that we play a 34 read and react defense. Parcells has never blitzed, he has not done that anywhere.

Parcells whole goal on defense is to have bigger smarter players who make plays.

Read some of the stuff about his giants and patriots defense, they played mostly 2 deep or cover 2 and just physically beat people up.

He is not from the mindset of a buddy ryan or wade phillips etc..phillips 34 is aggressive and blitzes alot, parcells defense does not now and has not ever.

Listen to troy aikman talk about when we used to play the giants and the pats when parcells was there, he says we knew exactly what they were doing but they were tough and smart and made plays.

Read and react, sometimes we do have scenarios where extra guys are coming though, but it looks different than the way most teams do this, for instance charlie watters last week on special edition with jerry jones broke this down perfectly last week. He showed how against jacksonville ware and james looked like they were both coming but there was a back there and when the back went inside ware came and james followed the back, most teams would send both and hope to confuse and just overload a side. Our defense reads and reacts first...

not trying to be a jerk, but the read and react part is the essence of the defense we play and that is why you do not see that zero blitz we used in 03 in the old scheme. It also helped to have darren woodson playing coverage.

I agree ,
Myself I hate the all out blitz with 9 guys going.
I like when in the 3/4 for 5 to be going all day long .front 3 and then mix it up with all the others..
I cant stress how much I hate the all out blitz.Seems like its just a big play on offense waiting to happen.

I really do believe that the Cowboys will blitz but don't won't to give up
their blitz schemes this early in the year. This would give opposing offenses a
chance to see and game plan for the blitz schemes.

This will not be a big blitz team... it just won't. But I will say that I don't want to see another "Jacksonville" where on 1st and 2nd downs the QB can just take his drop and have all the time in the world to select a receiver.
