I think his contract would be top 5 among safeties. Say if you were to franchise a safety.

Hamlin made Cowboys' franchise player
Associated Press

IRVING, Texas -- The Dallas Cowboys designated Ken Hamlin their franchise player on Thursday, locking up the Pro Bowl safety through at least next season.
The move essentially means Hamlin has a one-year contract at the average base salary of the top five safeties in the NFL: $4.4 million. It also keeps the unrestricted free agent off the market and extends the window to negotiate a long-term contract.
Hamlin made his first Pro Bowl during the Cowboys' 13-3 season. He finished with 62 tackles and five interceptions, one behind team leader Anthony Henry.

Of course that was back in 2008
Average for top 5 safeties in 2009 was $6.5 million. His 2010 salary will likely be outside the top 10 safeties.

So do you think he's being under-paid?

I'm just trying to substantiate earlier comments you've made that you think Hamlin is a top 5 NFL safety.

I'll take that as a no.

Theo, is Ken Hamlin still a top 5 safety or not?
Not a top 5 safety. He's one of the top free safeties, though.

What's funny is that you don't even get the inconsistency in your argument. If you think his coverage responsibilities are the reason he's not targeted much, you have to grant that his coverage responsibilities are the reason doesn't have many INTs. You can't have your cake and eat it too.

This probably never even occurred to you.

Took the words out of my mouth.

You know, despite the 13-3 record, our 2007 team got a lot of interceptions, but gave up a ton of points too. 325 PA in 2007 to 250 PA in 2009. Drastic improvement.

Perhaps the lack of gambling plays by our corners and safeties has resulted in less interceptions, but less points against as well?

Jacque Reeves, Anthony Henry and Keith Davis...

They weren't the best, you're right, and coincidentally we've given up 19 receiving TDs in each of the last three seasons, but many more of those this past season were garbage-time TDs than in previous years.

Interestingly enough, Ken Hamlin was here then, and he was here this past season when we allowed a near-league low 250 points. Hmm.

Yep, it was Ken Hamlin single-handidly.

I didn't say that, and if you've read my previous posts about our defensive backfield as a unit, you'll know that I stress the importance of the unit over any one individual, which is the exact reason why I don't think releasing one player and signing another player and plugging them in will take the Cowboys to the next level.

But you seem to suggest that it was single-handedly Anthony Henry, Jacques Reeves, and Keith Davis behind the 350 points allowed in 2007.

Kind of contradictory, don't ya think?

This makes no sense.

Ken Hamlin sucks.

Get over it theo.

Stop using your garbage "targeted" stats when talking about a safety.

Completely irrelevant and skewed.

Yeah, screw those coverage statistics when talking about how a player is in coverage.

What was I thinking?
