Sensabaugh to FS?

I know this has been mentioned before, but I'd feel more comfortable with Sensi calling the shots back there than Ball, M. Hamlin or a rookie.

What say you?

I say there is no reason he can't make the calls from his SS position.

He can still make the calls from the SS position. Paulumalu and Wilson do it for their teams.

He's a better run stopper than Ball and Hamlin-also a better cover guy than Hamlin-so he's the better candidate for the position.

He is by far our best safety and we love his versatility.

The question becomes who is the 2nd best safety in Training Camp.

Sensabaugh plays closer to the line right now (for run support) and often ends up in man coverage on a tight end and receiver, where he mostly excelled.

I don't think Ball, because of run support, or Hamlin, because of one-on-one coverage, would be good in that role. They are more suited to the way we are using the free safety, as a center fielder.

Who's gonna play FS then?

...is the question being echoed throughout these boards. Are you just messing with me or what?

There is little bit of chatter going around that we might draft a FS. It has also been speculated, today, on this very forum, that Scandrick and or Ball could play the FS. I myself even contributed to that idea.

There is also the chance we make a deal for Atogwe or bring him in once he is cut.

Not messing with you...just wanna know who you like to see at FS.

Oh, my bad.

Honestly I would prefer a vet with experience at FS. I think it is too hard to project who will be the best "ball hawk" so I would rather get a proven leader and playmaker. I think a healthy Atogwe would be a good fit. I also think Ball could fill the position if we draft a CB like McCourty.

I just don't think, even as it has evolved, the FS position is one you should break the bank on. I think, especially in the 3-4, the front seven and then CB's should be your focus.

In reference to Sensy, I think he played very well at SS last year and I think he is more suited to it. I would hate to move him just because we need a FS.

Ok, but wouldn't Sensi be even better playing with the ball in front of him (Rice catch comes to mind), rather than playing in a shorter area or man coverage?

Just asking...

Earl Thomas or Nate Allen if we draft one. If not I would love to see Atogwe or Sharper in here.

I'm warming up to the idea about signing another veteran like Sharper or Atogwe.

Even though Ken Hamlin didn't work out the way we wanted, I think a proven veteran would help more to make that SB push.

Despite the catch by Rice (who also burned Jenkins twice by the way), Sensabaugh excelled in man coverage ... and that's one of the reasons Dallas got him, to play that role.

I have no doubt he would do well playing as the deep man, but then we would be back to the same kind of situation we had with Roy Williams ... teams would be looking to get our strong safety in one-on-one coverage (if it's Mike Hamlin), or would be looking to run over Ball. I do believe Ball could handle the SS position (as Dallas is currently using it) better than Hamlin because of his matchup cover skills, but Sensabaugh is better suited for the position.

You need a strong run supporter and good man coverage player at strong safety in this system, and a good zone coverage man at free safety. Putting Sensabaugh at FS simply weakens the SS spot.

Good post. I couldn't have said it better. You don't fill one weakness to directly cause another.

Using this logic, the SS position has become more important than the FS position in our system.

True?

I don't think he is saying that at all.

I think he is simply saying, Sensy showed he was what we needed at SS last season. Why move him to FS, where he is unproven, and create another hole at SS. Also, Sensy's skill set is more directly applicable to the SS position.

Not necessarily more important, but it probably takes a better overall player.

The free safety has to be a heady player, though, one who understands the coverage, can read the offense and knows where he needs to be. Because we use essentially a single safety deep system, he has pressure on him to make the right choice and not let us get beat deep.
