Serious Carson Wentz Question

Serious question -- when did this guy get this label?

I'm always a little leery of guys who fly up the draft board due to what is essentially media hype out of nowhere. Dontari Poe comes to mind a few years ago...

What exactly are people seeing from watching the games and other things that makes them think this guy has what it takes for the NFL, despite playing against clearly inferior talent?

It would make more sense to me if anybody knew his name before January, but I had heard absolutely no buzz about him until then. Anybody got some real insight?

I haven't really watched any tape on him. (Wentz that is) It's funny that you mention Dontari Poe though. I remember that and when I watched tape on him, he definitely didn't fit the mold. That said, out of the gate he did make some noise which surprised me. Then he went in the toilet just like I predicted. (****, I hate patting myself on the back! :muttley: )

I'm all for drafting a young Qb to groom, but your sentiments are exactly why I don't want to burn a high pick on a position that rarely hits in the first place. I like playing the percentages that are favored. Defensive players hit more than "groomable" franchise QBs. Luckily the Cowboys just so happens to need playmakers on defense. It's just dosent make since to gamble when this team could use real play makers on D. Grab the highest rated player (and I'm sure it's not one of these project QBs) like Elliott, Ramsey, Bosa, Tunsil, Jack, Lawson, etc.. OR parlay that pick into another 2nd rounder to add even more talent. Just grab players that will contribute now..not a couple years down the road. The truth is, even if Romo missing a game or two.. He's not going anywhere. You just don't draft back ups!

Carson Wentz QB North Dakota St

STRENGTHS
Carson has excellent accuracy to go along with a strong arm. He can make all the throws with terrific velocity, accuracy, and touch. For a tall player, he has a good and quick release. Carson has the athletic talent to throw on the move and slide in the pocket to extend plays. Overall, Carson has the arm talent you look for in a starting quarterback in the NFL. He has good athleticism, size, and arm strength, as well as the ability to throw with accuracy under duress. Carson reminds me of the Falcons' Matt Ryan and, with the correct development and coaching, could become a winning and starting quarterback for the team that selects him.

CONCERNS
Carson is the whole offense for his college team and physically he is up to that challenge, but mentally he lacks the true leadership skills that he will need at the next level to be successful. What is it that Carson lacks you ask? He lacks the ability to demand more from his teammates on the field. Carson might be too nice of a person. He also does what all quarterbacks coming out of college do: stares down receivers, doesn’t consistently look off defensive backs, and struggles to slide in the pocket, reset and make a throw without being on the run. He can learn to overcome all the physical concerns, but as far as being too nice and not demanding of others, as long as he is winning this is not a problem. However, his team starts to lose a lot and in bunches, it becomes a big issue.

TALENT BOARD: ROUND 2
Carson is a developmental quarterback whose talent suggests that drafting him in the 1st round might be a very smart move in spite of the fact I give him a 2nd round talent grade. Selecting a quarterback with Carson’s potential in the 1st round is no longer a costly process and allows a team to have a 5th year option that would not apply if he is selected in a later round. Carson may always try to do too much instead of getting in the face of his teammates and demanding more from them, but that doesn’t mean he can’t change and become more demanding, it just means that’s the big question mark for him to overcome to become successful. Like I said, he needs to learn more about how to play his position at the NFL level because of the level of competition, but make no mistake about it, this kid has the physical and mental talent and work ethic to be successful. He must become a coach on the field who demands better play from his teammates and not settle for just trying to make his play the best. I have this saying that most people think is horrible and makes me a horrible person. It is that “I want everyone to like me, but when it comes to doing my job, I really don’t give a damn.” I think Carson needs to have that type of attitude to be a successful starting quarterback in the NFL. Given time he could develop a nastier attitude, but most of the time, a person is what they are and expecting more than what they are might be expecting too much. He might not be a franchise quarterback, but he should be a very good quarterback with the potential to be a franchise quarterback if he can learn to be more of a coach on the field.

As far as what people see in Carson Wentz, they see an intelligent QB who played in an NFL style offense, has a cannon for an arm, and generally has all the "tools" you look for in a QB prospect. He's more raw than us Wentz fans would like, but that comes with playing at a small school.

I don't really know why you use Dontari Poe as an example, though. He's been an integral part of the Chiefs defensive success.

He's an empty vessel that people can fill with whatever QB fantasy they can dream up while they watch him vs Weber St and South Dakota.

I think the fact he was coached by Garrett at the Senior Bowl also plays a part. There's a perceived need at QB in Dallas among sportswriters and some fans. A narrative formed around him being worthy of a top 5 pick because we had a top 5 pick and the Dallas coaches would be unable to help but fall in love with him once they worked with him.

Wentz is equivalent to Andy Dalton or Kaepernick; a late first/early second prospect. He has good tools but shouldn't be sniffing anywhere near top 15.

You had a pretty interesting argument going until you compared him to Andy Dalton. If Tennessee could have drafted Dalton at 8th Overall instead of Jake Locker, knowing what we know today, they'd have done it in a heart beat.

I don't like any of these QB's as our future starter. None are worth a top 5 pick IMO and I don't want Dallas reaching for one. I do like Goff to develop, but he is in no way going to take over for Romo and win consistently if Tony goes down. That goes for Wentz, Lynch, whoever in this draft.

I really am skeptical on Wentz, just go best player available and call it a day. Elliot would make this team better on day one :D

Von Miller was considering good before the combine, only to sky rocket to the top and become the 2nd overall pick.

Draft cant get here soon enough. I am starting to suffer from franchise QB debate burnout.

Agreed. Of all the things Roger Goodell has done to the league, by far the worst is moving the draft back.

Is it a coincidence that ND State has its Pro Day so close to Easter? I think not...just ask Risen Star.

Steve NcNair played against weaker competition in college and he turned out fine. Wentz has been getting attention way before last December and there is a good reason for it.
