I'm not blaming them but when people talk about kids getting paid to play college ball the reality is they are being given something of great value, it is their choice to take advantage of it or not. If a player wants to leave early to go to the Pros that is their choice as well for some it works out and for others it doesn't and in the end it came down to each athletes own choices that they make for themselves so if it blows up in their face well that was the choice that player made and has no one to blame but himself.
I don't believe I said they should be paid. I will say this though. 18 to 21 males in the prime of their lives, and they are not allowed any type of income (unless their parents are loaded) in order to be able to even pay for dates or go to a movie with the guys.

This is a good thing? Naw. It's no wonder so many of these kids get in trouble or leave early.

Anyone who doesn't think it is a restrictive lifestyle is kidding themselves. I say that and still acknowledge that I'd have lived it to the fullest if I could do it over again.

The NCAA is too restrictive of the athletes. That is a truth whether anyone wants to acknowledge it or not. For example, while at UNLV on a basketball scholarship Greg Anthony owned his own business. He bought and paid for it with his own money. The NCAA made him get rid of it.

Forgive me, isn't that what college is supposed to be about? Teaching you how to do exactly that if you so choose? He did it the right way, and got slapped down for it.

That's wrong.

The beginning of the thread was about paying college players.
I said earlier that I have no issue with players being given an allowance as long as it is across the board and involves all NCAA sports so I do disagree with the NCAA on that issue. However that is not what causes kids to leave early, it is the desire to make big time money the problem is many are not ready mentally to deal with it and have agents yaking in their ear telling them how great they will be only to find out the NFL does not think that and they end up not getting the big pay day and lost out on the education as well.

since every yr media complains and whines about players coming out early, and they're not ready, shouldnt the ncaa be thinking of why these players are leaving? number 1 reason financial hardship for their families, and themselves, as some have kids.

considering the ncaa and respective schools makes hundreds of millions to tens of billions on these kids, why doesnt the ncaa get off the high horse and the mountain of hypcrisy they have built. while i agree some kids and boosters go overboard, but the ncaa is also suspending kids for accepting a free meal here and there, a few articles of clothes. a suit to a banquit.

these players are what make 50-80% of their school athletic revenue. its just obsurd that the school exploits these kids every yr, but hold them to a higher standard.

with all that said u want to keep kids in school and wait for professional level until they're "ready", its time to start paying them a little of what they earn their respective school

Just take Notre Dames money that they've stolen from the BCS the last two years and give it to all the other school's players.

we could have a serious debate but it's been done to death and the discussion is always the same.

I didn't respond to the initial post. I responded to the "free education" reply. It isn't free. They sacrifice a lot for that privilege. Sometimes even their health and well being. Some may call it an even swap. I think that is debatable.

To be pampered throughout high school and college. And on top of that have the opportunity to get a free college education. Depending on the college, the scholarships can be worth $5,000 to $50,000 a year.

If these fans and players thing they are being shortchanged, it could be worse. I mean working in the library parttime earning a minimum wage and then doubling missing out on sleep and a social life to study.

Yep, these players make billions for school across the nation.
But let's not lose perspective. There are hard-luck stories at every college.
But the thing is to get an education. If they and their families don't value that, too bad.

are athletes spoiled and pampered? YES
do most of them get a free education, room and board? YES
do i feel they deserve to get paid? YES

Big Time Athletics bring in tons of money to the universities....I feel the athletes should get a cut of that money. I mean they are the reason people go to the games and buy the merchandise. I also feel that by giving the athletes a stipend, it would cut down on the under the table cheating....like the booster club and alumni giving money and gifts to the players.

It doesn't have to be an enormous amount of money....$2500 per season per player...or something along those lines
