If you trade a player now, you don't get their cap savings benefit now (if they have one) because the trade won't be processed until after the start of the league year.

If you designate someone as a June 1 cut, their cap savings doesn't hit until June 1. In other words, if a team has zero cap space on March 17th and the designate someone a June 1 cut, they can't use that saved cap space to sign someone on March 18th because the space isn't available until June 1.

Raging debate at lunch. I think my Eagles and Giants co-workers are going to come to blows.

On part of it you're not exactly right. If a trade occurs before the start of the new league year, any savings that it would result because of the trade then is applied and is no different than if a team releases a player and there is a savings by doing it. Example the lions were over the project cap before they traded Stafford but as soon as that trade was done their cap reflected the savings by doing that. Also as soon as the new league year starts only the top 51 salaries count against the cap so if you trade away a top 51 salary, you gain cap room to be able to use when free agency starts. You are right on how designating a June 1st cut goes.

Let them beat each other before you say anything.

Ask your buddies why a team would need to realize the cap savings now as opposed to the beginning of the league year.

I'm not understanding how that could matter.

Real Cowboys fans don't have Eagles and Giants co-workers.

What if you're a Cowboys fan and live and work in a different NFL city? When I first moved here I found a rather large group of Cowboys fans that went to Hooters on Sundays to watch the game. Ot6her than the local packer fans, we were by far the largest group of a team not located in Green Bay.

When I lived in Phoenix there were 2 sports bars next to each other with a big parking lot between them. One was a designated Cowboys sports bar and the other was a designated packer sports bar. The building for the Cowboys bar was twice as big as the packer4s bar. One Sunday I went in the Cowboys bar and it was packed and out of curiosity at half time I walked over to the packers bar who's game was on at the same time and that bar had only about 15 people in it. I asked one of the people there is this how many packer fans come here to watch games and he said usually there are a few more but that the packers have fans all over the world. I laughed and asked if he had ever been next door and he said no and I said right now there's probably 150 people in the Cowboys bar. There's 2 TV's here, 3 if you count the little one in the hallway to the bathroom and next door there are 8 TV's all with the Cowboys game on them so everyone regardless where they were sitting or standing could see the game.

They were arguing over Zach Ertz. Philly trying to trade him to save on cap. Eagles fan said they needed to move him to get cap compliant by March 17th, Giants fan claimed they wouldn't get the cap savings from trading him until after the league year started as trades aren't processed until after the start of the league year.

Then why did the lions cap change as soon as the trade was made?

Yeah, that's nice.

I don't talk to fans of other teams. There would have been blood.

They don't need the cap savings until the start of the league year.

Anything you hear now is about teams being under or over the cap is based on the upcoming year, not the one that just happened.

Immediate relief is irrelevant.

THE CAP should be worn bill facing forward as it was constructed to provide shade for the eyes. The Catcher is the only one permitted to wear his cap backwards. Cap debate over and Romo looked exceptionally dumb with his cap backwards. Made his Dumbo ears look even Dumboier.

I believe you are right on this. as soon as the league approves the trade it becomes effective and the cap ramifications become effective as well.

Wednesday, March 17 also means that trades which have been previously agreed to — such as the Jared Goff-Matthew Stafford swap — will become official, and deals can be struck.

So before you talk to a stranger you first ask if they are a Cowboys fan? I have no love for any other team, but like just about every other person I can talk to people who are fans of other teams without there being any blood.
