NFL Free-Agency Forecast: ‘It’s a Really Bad Group Overall’

A few AFC execs weigh in on the talent of this year’s group. Plus, Albert Breer forecasts this week’s frenzy, including who lands with which teams.

Albert Breer | 1 Hour Ago

You’re getting the lead here a day early, ahead of free agency, but that doesn’t mean the takeaways aren’t coming. On Monday morning, we’ll have those for you with …

• How the Maxx Crosby deal came together and what it means in Las Vegas.

• Background on the Geno Smith trade, and fallout for both teams.

• More on Sam Darnold, Justin Fields and the quarterback market.

But we’re starting here with an overview of what’s ahead over the next 72 hours (or so).

In 72 hours, your team may look a little different.

But not as much as was the case in the past few years. For one specific reason.

“It’s a really bad group overall,” one AFC exec says of this year’s free-agent class.

Yeah,
It looked worse than last year!

@Hawkeye0202 good read, definitely some nuggets in there. The AFC exec said it, so for Dallas go get your OG/C, LB, or CB in FA. Be aggressive fill those roles and move on to the draft.

Aaron Jones is off the board, so I look for Rico's market to increase slightly perhaps. Still wouldn't be surprised to see Rico re-signed.

"Really bad WR class".
That's surprising, but I guess it depends on what you need. It's a bad year to find a possible WR1, but if you're in the market for a 2 and 3 you can find some tred left on some veteran names. I think it's a pretty interesting class littered with 30 something wrs that are big names, but are declining. If you want a stop gap WR that can give you solid production for a season or two.

Key quote:

That’s incredible. Rapid growth has left teams with every resource they need to keep the players they want. Forget about just the quarterbacks. If you have a left tackle, receiver, corner, or pass rusher you want to retain, there’s almost no chance he gets to free agency. And if there’s even a hint it could happen? He’ll be traded ahead of time.”

Everyone except the Cowboys…

Those aren't declining WRs they are just done and dusted WRs.
It's a terrible free agent class.
WRs decline faster than almost any other position. See Dez Bryant.
As they explain, the reason this FA class overall is so bad is that the cap has increased so much the last few years that teams can easily keep anyone they want.
This year specifically anyone decent has been resigned.

It's hilarious that Parsons isn't signed yet. He was begging to be signed a few weeks ago.

We are run by two morons.

BREAKING NEWS: The KEY TO players getting more money that are money is to REQUEST A TRADE, remove the teams info from your social media, BOOM you'll get a new deal instantly!!

TEAMS are signing players already, whatever happened to legal tampering actually starting

That’s why you have to find the best route runner of that group which is probably Coop..

I'd be out on either Coop. I feel for Kupp but he will be 32 by the time the season starts

Amari has been on 4 teams already and had just over 500 yards receiving last year on almost 90 targets. Thats a massive no.

Both those guys efficiency has fallen off the face of the earth.
The premium in this free agency class is anyone that can still run as they note in the article.

You are simply MUCH better off draft a kid in round 1 or 2 that is 10 years younger.

I still like Tx Golden here...

Yeah this take surprises me a bit also.......seems lots of good #2 guys with another year two left.

If Golden makes it to Dallas in Round 2 that is a pretty sweet spot for him.
But he has really been rising on boards.
JT.....you can forget that (lol). Some mocks have moved him into the top 15. No way he's making it to our 2nd ........not happening (lol)
