Shaking up the D line & Changes at LB

To me, Thornton gets pushed around too much. He makes some hustle plays, but just doesn't dominate as is needed inside.

And Jack Crawford was basically a fall back plan signed late in free agency.

Very late, and playing fairly well:

Player Total Solo Assist SCK F

Jack Crawford 7 4 3 1 0
Terrell McClain 8 4 4 0 0
Cedric Thornton 6 3 3 0 0
Tyrone Crawford 3 3 0 1 0
Maliek Collins 3 2 1 0 0
David Irving 1 1 0 0 0
Benson Mayowa 2 1 1

If Collins can become our franchise 3-tech, it'll go a long way towards solidifying this line, especially once Lawrence comes back. This draft could have set us up nicely going forward, as long as Smith's nerving starts firing. Expending significant resources on the dline next offseason will be critical.

So, when Lawrence gets back, our starting lineup will look something like this:

LDE: T. Crawford

3-Tech: Collins

1-Tech: McClain

RDE: Lawrence

With J. Crawford as the main rotational DE and Thorton as the main rotational DT? Is that right?

If T Crawford does not get his butt in gear, you may want to replace the T with a J as the starter.

This defense will improve after next years draft. It will be very average this season but will improve some after Lawrence returns. Still, nothing to get too excited about.

Looks like T Crawford moving to DE, J Crawford starting over Mayowa with McClain & Collins starting @ DT.

Hitchens being replaced by Durant.

Would also like to see what Davis can do at end.

Yep................just as some predicted, the DE's would do nothing in the absence of Lawrence. I like the move. And Hitchens is certainly horrid.

I don't think so. I think when lawrence is back crawford goes back to the under tackle.

I think what people are misunderstanding is that they moved crawford to get him away from the double team. he is getting doubled every play because there is no worry on the edge. If lawrence comes back and is pretty good maybe it will free up the inside a little.

i would bet crawford and collins will play a little next to each other inside when lawrence gets back also because you can't double them both with an edge rush.

I haven't really been impressed with anyone they've had playing defead feared during the offseason has come to pass.
Very average DT is not much better. Thrnton gets trap blocked on every run play and is a liability where he should be a strength.

The only way this defense gets respectable is to draft talent or sign talent. As guys like Lee and Scandrick get older.

Yep, but no doubt all the castoff FA's and rookies they bring in will be "just fine" next year in the off season. Draft and sign Talent. Its the only way to fix this defense.

We'll see. I like the idea of having a bigger body like Collins in base and Crawford on the outside sliding in with Collins on passing downs.
