Well, Jerry is starting to prove a point that there will be character clean up regardless of who you are and everyone must play up to their contract or else. But there is still a lot of work to do in my opinion if we're going to make critical moves like we have the last week to finish the project. We might as well get rid of all the other malcontents and underachievers even if they are depth. How about coaching? Captain Cupcake has 1 year left on his contract, Garrett still will have 1 more.
There may not be a cap next year and considering all of these factors I can see why Jerry is keeping the core of the coaching staff on for 1 more year.
He did make some examples in those ranks by getting rid of both the DC and ST coaches at least to prove a point there. The bottom line is that this is a season of organizing and trying to win while doing so.
If it doesn't pan out a new coach will be in next season, possibly Shanny, and there will be a foundation of players to build around but enough parts and openings to be tweaked and filled to incorporate the new playing philosophy, possibly without a cap. Considering all of these factors here is a list of guys that are up for debate to be crucified within the current process:
Greg Ellis: $5 million cap savings, declining abilities, 3 year malcontent
Bobby Carpenter: 1st rounder, top underachiever on team, media informer
Pat Watkins & Both Courtneys: 3 years, not sure if they're even solid depth
Isiah Stanback: Just hasn't amounted to anything, never healthy
Sam Hurd: 3 years, had opportunities and is either hurt or can't capitalize
Cory Proctor: Tenders aren't guaranteed and he's outright awful depth
Rest of O-line depth: Other than Holland and maybe Free churn em
Wade & Garrett: They're obviously staying this year but their heads are on the chopping block and timing to get another staff has passed. This coaching chapter ends this season.
So why not finish the job. What do you folks think?
