Shanahan laughs off coaching rumors

Late Friday afternoon, when multiple reports surfaced that Kansas City and Mike Shanahan were close to a deal that would make him the next head coach of the Chiefs, the former Broncos coach could not be found. He was missing for a brief time, his cell phone going directly to voice mail.

Shanahan quickly found out the fuss he indirectly and unknowingly had created. When he walked off the golf course and into the clubhouse after playing 18, multiple golfers asked Shanahan if it were true he was closing in on a deal with the Chiefs.

Shanahan laughed. He had heard the rumors since Thursday morning, when members of his former coaching staff began calling to ask him if it were true that he was going to Kansas City.

As he told the people in the golf clubhouse, there was nothing new Friday that hadn’t been true on Thursday. He had not had any contact with the Chiefs, didn’t plan to have any contact with the Chiefs, and would not be coaching the Chiefs.

In other words, he would have more time to play golf.

Mort said this morning that his wife wanted him to decompress for a year and he was going to do just that.

Now where were all those "OMG Jerry is an idiotz for not hiring him!!!!" posts again?

Barring a huge turnaround in '09, I think he's our coach a year from now.

Well, if he does take a year off it might be a great thing. Recharge his battery a bit and be ready to go in 2010. With any luck his recharged battery might be on our sideline. Until then, all speculation, hopes and wishes.

Why is this accepted behavior from the media?

Why does noone call them out when they tell out-right lies?

It used to be that you read the newspaper or watched the news on TV to get the facts.

Now it is a joke, and can be damaging at times.

They are lucky that MS just laughed it off.

Really?

When?

well shefter should know what he is doing, his work with shanhan on the book together and covering the broncos is what helped get him on the nfl network and get a national job.

Schefter has been wrong also. Two years ago, he reported that Coach Parcells was coming back when he simply wasn't.

It is just smarter to trust him on this issue since he is so close to Shanahan.

don't know what all the fuss is about Shanahan. He's an older guy, he's already made millions, won his rings, so what's the motivation for him?

I'd prefer the Cowboys get a young guy, an up and comer with alot to prove. Look no further than the 2 guys coaching in the Super Bowl this year. Can the GM find somebody like that? Very doubtful. He's more worried about finding someone he's comfortable with (i.e a puppet), or a retread that can fix one side of the ball.

I would be happy with Shannahan being hired as an offseason consultant to sit down with Garrett and share some expertise!

Last year, the soup du jour was to get some old battle ax like Coughlin or Belichick.

Now, he needs to get some young turk because everyone thinks that is the missing ingredient.

Fact is, he just needs to get a competent head coach capable of instilling discipline and winning playoffs games. Young or old. We do not have that right now.

So he's saying there's a chance!

You mean, just because everyone in the media repeats something doesn't make it true?

Shanahan is waiting for the Dallas job... I'd like to see Shanahan or Holmgren coaching the Boys after 2009 because we all know Wade will never lead Dallas to a championship.

I have to agree, age really matters not but a leader of men is a must.

The 'dancing in the streets' has turned into mass hysteria up here. Panic mode has set back in. Chris Mortenson is hated again. I love it!!!
