that's it, when a player realizes that they are just not good enough to compete at this level, than they are done. Looking for a vet safety cut win its trim time.
Or money screws up some.

If you're ever had a million in the bank, it does make it hard to put up with things like bosses getting on your butt.

Ignore what you read before.

Now it has to be some issue where he "mentally checked out".

He was like really good, I was right, but gosh, he must have just mentally checked out or something.
Still stalking. I think there are rules against that...

They'll let him pass waivers, reclaim him and put him on IR. If he's needed at some point they'll reactivate him.

Why would they do this? He can be placed on IR without waiving him. I think this points to a more serious injury and they don't want to pay him all year.

So it's IR or nothing. Man we need that extra roster spot that it's going to take to sign another QB.
One player can be recalled from IR, but the Cowboys are unlikely to put Romo on IR because they think he could return soon.

It clears a roster spot.

Non-vested players (less than 4 accrued NFL seasons) will automatically revert to a team's injured reserve if they go unclaimed after being waived/injured.

If it is a short term injury, the player will often be given an injury settlement when he gets waived. The payment will typically reflect how many regular season games the player would miss before a return to health. A player given an injury settlement can sign with another team at any time, if he returns to game action sooner than his settlement, the former team will receive a salary cap credit for the difference.

A player given an injury settlement can't re-sign with his original team until the covered time has passed plus an additional 3 weeks (it was 6 weeks prior to this season).

Injury settlements must be reached within 5 days of going on IR, otherwise the player will remain on IR for the season or until he can pass a physical, at which time he may be released.

Non-vested players often have "split salary" clauses in their contracts unless they are higher round draft picks. Split salary means they don't get paid the full amount if they go on IR before or early in the regular season. Such players do not accrue a season of service towards unrestricted free agency.

No. He can't until the 53 cut down. No one is going to claim an injured guy with the 53 cut coming in a week. Cut him now, you've got another guy you can play in the last game.

That 75 man roster is pretty deliberate. Everyone but your starting 22

He was good enough in 2014.

Now he seems to have checked out mentally.

He sucked in 2014 and I said he was regressing then. I remember providing you the all22 video of all the mistakes he was making then. We already had this conversation.

His best season was his rookie season and got worse every year.

J.J. Wilcox ($1.661M) is scheduled to make too much money to be a special teams player and reserve safety you don't want to see on the field.

We already have one of those named Jeff Heath who is better on special teams.

Wilcox is on the final year of his rookie contract and has no future with the Dallas Cowboys, so there's no reason to put him on IR with a minor injury.

The team will use an injury release and wipe their hands of another disappointing small school draft selection.
That will be a happy day.

He didn't play defense as a rookie. That was the year Heath started.

Was there another JJ Wilcox on the team?

Dallas Cowboys
2013
Wilcox was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the third round (80th overall) of the 2013 NFL Draft.[2] Even though coming out of college he had only played safety for one year, the Cowboys were going to name him the starter at free safety on the day that his mother died. The two weeks he took to deal with his personal loss slowed his progress and the team decided to name veteran Will Allen the starter instead.[3] He would eventually pass Allen on the depth chart and start five consecutive games, until suffering a right sprained knee in practice, that forced him to miss 3 games and being replaced by rookie Jeff Heath. He finished the year in a reserve role with 38 tackles.

Mike,

I am glad I was not the only one asking this question. I have been so busy lately, I figured I missed it.

I'm wondering if the whole story was a partially made up BS thing in order to sneak him through waivers now in order to get him on IR.

I had forgotten he was a 3rd round pick, don't know why I thought it was lower. Well maybe I do know why :)
