If you knew then, would you rather have Shaq Lawson @19 undergoing shoulder surgery before the season with a 5-6 month recovery timetable or Jaylon Smith @34 recovering from nerve damage with an unknown return date?

Yeah, it's the offseason...

I'd rather have had a healthy defensive player than either of them at 34. If I had to pick, I'd probably take Smith, but I wouldn't be happy about it.

I'd much rather have Jaylon Smith at #34 than Lawson at #19. Smith has more upside. And Lawson would have been a position of need DE thinned even more.

This board would have erupted with hate if the Cowboys had selected Lawson when there were rumors of him needing surgery pre-draft. Lawson missing perhaps 6 months is a shock and would have hurt worse than Jaylon Smith missing expected time.

If Lawson misses 6 months, that might be a redshirt year for him.

With both players healthy, Smith is the far superior prospect. With the shoulder issue versus the knee/nerve issue, Lawson has the greater likelihood of overcoming it completely, as the nerve reawakening is a huge unknown.

I've come to terms with Jaylon Smith. He's going to do everything in his power to be what he should be. If he fails, it's entirely about the knee. If Lawson fails (or at least doesn't become a very good pass rusher), he has some other factors in his game that could contribute to that happening.

Plus, I'm intrigued by Tapper and taking Lawson probably means we pass on Tapper.

The nerve really isn't an unknown, there just isn't a guarantee. But science shows that the nerves regenerate if there isn't too much damage. Dr Cooper who is the top specialist says he saw very little to no damage and Jaylon is also feeling tingling sensations which is evidence that the nerve is regenerating.

Lawson, this is a no brainer. Smith may never be what he was and nobody else was gonna touch him near that high. Lawson injury has much more certainty to it.

New England was at 61 and they had the ammo to trade up had the Cowboys traded down.

I'd have taken Shaq even with shoulder surgery. Would rather deal with upper body injury than lower body in football.

I even put in a disclaimer for the likes of you. Then again, all you'd have posted was a stolen gif anyway so not much difference.

Yes, but you're fat. Fatty.

Lawson knows he's coming back and could be the real deal. The nerve injury is scary, even for Jaylon personally.

You don't take a risk on a high second rounder when you don't have the luxury of having a stacked team. Hell I rather they take a TE in the second. Rsther than a player that might or might not be able to play at 100%

I'm not upset or ecstatic about the pick, but it makes for good story and we all know who likes that.
