I'm thinking about moving to shaving via a straight blade, single edge or double edge razor. I'm pretty tired of dishing out a lot of money for disposable blades.

Do any of you shave in any of the above techniques and if so, what's your recommendations and is it worth it?

I've actually been looking into a safety razor, but generally I do not shave except for specific events. Most of the time I just use a Wahl trimmer at the lowest setting and deal with my 72 hour shadow all the time.

i just got harrys blades and damn good stuff. free shipping will take like 10 days to get you started but after that - for around $25 you get the nice handle and like 18 blades?

Feather double-edged razor blades. Buy 100 for $24 off Amazon. Merkur safety razor for about $40 that will last a lifetime. I went with this combo about 6 years ago and I like it. Head of the razor is a bit bulky to get into the high upper lip area underneath the nose so I do have a cheap little disposable to sneak up on that area.

Best shave at home is about beard reduction. Don't try to do too much with a single pass. It ain't happening. 1st pass with the grain. 2nd pass perpendicular to the grain. 3rd pass, if needed, against the grain. Don't need to pass and re-pass as it will do the job a 5-blade disposable will do in a single pass, but there's nothing close to the shave you get with a little patience.

Also, you can extend the life of your blades a bit if you keep them dry. I keep a small lidded jar (something that will hold an inch or so of liquid) of isopropyl alcohol in the bathroom. Dunk and swirl before the shave to disinfect and and clean any debris that might be on it. Dunk and swirl after the shave to clean and expel any water so it will dry as soon as possible.

I have another brand that does the same thing.

I wonder if close shaves just don't exist with those electric razors.

Also, I heard that the metal could be bad for your skin.

I get a much better shave, but still cut myself if I get in a hurry. Sometimes it will take 2-3 passes to get a baby face smoothness.

I've probably been given as gifts four or five electric razors, they are all useless. Especially on neck,throat area.

I bite the bullet and go with the Gillette Mach II...the old one.
