http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/1...thinks-nfl-proposed-n-word-ban-atrocious-idea
Richard Sherman does not agree with the NFL's proposed ban on use of the N-word on the playing field, calling it an "atrocious idea" that is "almost racist."

The league's competition committee is expected to discuss a rule where players would be penalized 15 yards for using racial slurs on the field. Sherman lashed out at the proposal in a recent interview with themmqb.com, which surveyed three black players (Sherman, Tennessee Titans cornerback Jason McCourty and free-agent linebacker D'Qwell Jackson) on the proposal. Two of the three were against it, with only Jackson supporting the ban.

IMO this word needs to go. Sherman says its almost racist to ban because black players view it as everyday life. Here's where the problem is, if a white player uses it in the same context, they are racist. Look at the uproar from Coopers comments. It's a negative word, i know plenty of black people who hate the word. And one of my best friends beat his kid for using that word. I think the NFL tries to do too much but this kind of change is good.

It is going to be so hard to regulate. I would rather furious if a close game ended was hinged on whether some player said the N-Word.

I don't like the word itself of course, but I think that this is going to become a problem. SOOOO many flags will be thrown.

What i'd like to know is....when the infraction occurs, will the refs tell us who yelled the N word? for example if Tom Brady gets sacked, and he gets up screaming at someone, will the refs address unsportsmanlike conduct using the N word #12 offense?

Sherman is a smart guy, but that's a dumb statement. Not everything is racist or even almost racist.

The proposed rule is there to help eliminate hateful remarks, and It's not just targeting the "N" word. Other racial and gay slurs are rumored to be included as well.

I think in battle and mental warfare, one should be able to say ANYTHING to the enemy and expect ANYTHING to be said right back at you.

People need to get thicker skin.

Well rumored to be and actually included are two completely different things. They are currently targeting the blacks exclusively.

Agree. Today's society is so wimpy. They should ban cursing and slurs to the refs. Player to player is in the heat if battle. Man up.

I've heard more people say it including radio personalities dancing around the "F" word... and not the four letter one.

Edit: I've done a bit of research and it seems that it is not officially included or at least isn't confirmed to be. But the point still stands, it isn't racist or even almost racist.

To target just one group is pretty much racist when the N word for blacks is a term of endearment. Now if they were targeting all slurs and all non-PC words then it's different but just to target only the N word in a prodominatly black sport ran by white men is racism.

But it isn't really a "hateful" remark when a black man uses it against another black man, which I imagine is the only way it is ever used on the field. Lots of black men use the word as a sign of comradery. Sure, a lot of black men are upset that their fellow blacks use the word because black people have a different opinion of the use of the word (some think it's taking the word back, and some think it's giving the power to the white man) but no black man is offended in the sense that another black man said something hateful to him.

I highly highly highly highly doubt a white guy has the guts to run around the field screaming the N word at every black man he tackles. Now, using the homosexual F word is probably very common because anyone who's grown up playing football knows that words used to attack a man's masculinity are commonly used in organized sports.

They're targeting the word itself, not a specific group.

The word is upsetting or a term of endearment depending on who is saying it, so the NFL is just trying to eliminate it altogether to sterilize the situation.

The benefit isn't clear since it doesn't seem to be a huge problem among players, but the intent is probably some misguided response to the Riley Cooper incident last year-- a preemptive PC strike to create the appearance that the NFL will not tolerate racism.

And obviously the rules and etiquette surrounding the word varies from person to person, so eliminating both uses is not a racist act. Overly PC/Misguided/Unwarranted and or unwanted? Probably. But not racist or even close to it.

Yeah man. I'm half black and know how it works. On top of that I grew up in a small town in East Texas so I'm pretty aware of what it sounds like when its used hatefully, as a term of endearment, or for shock comedy.

Whether or not a white guy is going around dropping N-bombs on the field is almost irrelevant. The NFL wants to clean it's image up with regard to stuff like that so they'll over compensate with misguided PC (likely in response to Riley Cooper, see above comment).

Just because the word is used in majority by black players and they would be more directly affected, doesn't make this a racist move. It's not like they're saying "Okay we're taking this word from you, you can't use it anymore but white players can". They're taking it away from all players because of the words ambiguous nature (or at least giving the appearance that they are).

It would be racist to make a rule saying "Black players can use the word because it's their word, but if a white person says it, they will be fined and their team will be penalized."

Make sense?

Why doesn't Sherman ask the older generation of African Americans if the "N word" is cool and should be used in any manner on any field or anywhere for that matter. You can't change the historical impact of the word and what it originally was used as by just saying to others nonchalantly as a friendly greeting. He wasn't around and neither was I when it was being used as a racist, mean, and very offensive word.

It will never work as long as some people can say a word, .. but other people can not say the same word.

That makes no sense.

Because it is so offensive to some, .. out of respect, .. everybody should stop using it.

What if he hears it in the pile, .. but he can't tell who said the N word?

He heard the word, .. but he can't throw the flag.

Using the word is still freedom of speech and should be left up to the person using it. If they ban this one word, will it be okay to use other racial slurs? I see it as opening up a big can of worms and there are many, many words that are just as bad. I have trouble seeing freedom of speech as a right that only applies in certain situations.

There has never been an ultimate right to free speech. The classic example used by the Supreme Court is that you cannot scream "fire" in a crowded theater. Using the N word in certain circumstances may create that inflammatory situation. And that behavior should not be allowed - ever. But as described here, the word may also be used as an endearment rather than a negative remark to someone. Guess that is something that is new to our young culture - me I don't get it. As they say, never put yourself down, there are too many people around to do it for you. Guess that makes me an old fart.

I kind of look at it this way, can't someone control themselves during a football game?? A message is being sent. And in particular if it is being said to refs as stated in one post. Don't like that one bit. What upsets me more is the increase in cheap shots and taking players out. And the fans openly saying on message boards to take a player out so they can win. That to me is something far more important that needs to be addressed. And says something about our society. It is called integrity. Making a good clean hit that results in an injury is part of the game, but going out to take a player out is another.

As the old statement goes, I know justice when I see it. Most of us do. Except for the ignorants of the world - we certainly have enough of those folks. All this rule does is eliminate the need for refs to try to figure out how the word is being used. The refs have better things to do, like trying to make the right calls more often. I think though that this new "rule" could be included in the un-sportsman like behavior, and let it be known that it will be included. But I think as a separate rule it is a little over the top, but really do not have a problem if it is implemented.

I would like to think that racism is a thing of the past, and for the most part that has happened. The way I was brought up, there was never a negative comment, ever, in my home about any group of people. It is just ridiculous to think that a different "group" makes for a better person. Better to judge a person on their own merits. And a jerk is a jerk is a jerk. And jerks come in all sizes, shapes, colors, and gender. Unfortunately, that is just the way it is. All good people in the world - never going to happen. A look at a history book will tell you that.

Guess as I am writing this I have changed my mind. Implement the rule. Just eliminates another negative from the game we all enjoy.

I was not suggesting it should be banned, .. quite the opposite.

I said, .. because it offends, ... out of respect, people should stop saying it.

Big difference.

@FootballFan1 nails it in his first paragraph.

But ultimately freedom of speech, even if taken at complete face value, is for a social/political setting-- not a privatized business.

If I started dropping N-bombs in the office, I'm sure I would be reprimanded or even fired... just like Hugh Douglas.
