I guess I find it pretty amazing some of the comments in this thread and others like it about Mcfadden, Barber and running backs in general.
The prevelant thinking is that running back is the easiest position to fill. If you listen to the pros, it is the one position that the natural talent of the player can shine because they are essentially running to daylight.
The notion that we can plug in anyone behind Barber to play for this team kind of underscores this type of thinking with some of the fan base. The any port in the storm theory has players as late as the third round who can produce the ten to twelve plays a game to spell Barber and still make the offense hum.
Then we hear from some of the very same posters that McFadden will not be as good as college. They cite failures in the first rounds for this position. Kajana Carter comes to mind here.
So on one hand, any guy can come in and play for ten to twelve plays a game and produce. If you are asking that guy to come in and play an addition ten to twelve plays, suddenly the premier back in college has potential of being a bust.
Now it is my theory that each player, regardless of where they are chosen has essentially the same opportunity to be a bust or get a bust in Canton. The bust factor is only significant if the player was taken in a top round of day one. The higher up he was selected, the more scrutiny and the bust label becomes more of an issue.
You hardly see anyone say the last guy drafted is a bust. Money here is what is the issue with some fans. It is not my money, and while it does all tie in together, what McFadden, or any plaer ios paid doesn't mean anything to me as long as he produces. His production is not tiesd to money for me. If McFadden were paid 6 million a year and hung up 1100 yards rushing and another 350 passing with 15 TDs, that is enough with a solid back-up. His draft slot and paycheck mean nothing if he integrates into the team and they continue to win.
I have no idea what will transpire on draft day. The Cowboys have the ammo to go get McFadden, if Jerry believes he is the missing piece.
Barber is not worth the Turner contract. The reason is he will not be in the league producing at the level he has three years from now. He will not be able to take the wear and tear. You will never convince me, until it happens, that he will be capable of taking the pounding game in and game out that he seems to relish as a running back.
That in and of itself tells me Jerry will either find his replacement in this draft, or find his replacement in this draft. Jerry will either push all-in and go get McFadden, or move up and get someone else that can be the main focus that is not McFadden.
Regardless of his heart, or core of the team status, Barber is a good back, but not a great one.
If someone gives us the first and third, Jerry will move up big time and go get Mcfadden and still have the ammo to get a Ray Rice. Especially if they are enamored with ther idea of Pacman or Hall or both.
Don't allow the cap to fool you here. There are times to be conservative and times to go get the hardware. As much as some like to lambast Jerry, we will see exactly what kind of GM he is now.
As a side note, I believe Jerry will wait the year out and when Roy Williams forces the Lions to either tag him or let him go, Jerry will get him cheap because the Lions will not tag him. Just my opinion.
