Should I Get Back Into School?

Going to College is a payback. Not in just money, but a more rounded education in many subjects. The more you know about different subjects gives you and advantage in life. Not, all the time, but most of the time.

I hope the economy gets better so more kids can go to College, because it's helps to have that paper.

;)
Totally agree.
When people are young, they see 4-5 years as so much time. But it is nothing...and the experience can be incredible. I mean the difference between hitting the workforce at 18 and 22, when you will be in the workforce for 30-40 years, is so minimal.

To each his own though.

I doubt some will understand that.

College is worth it just for the experience...

To the OP, my rec. would be to get a GED asap and go to a community college before transferring to a 4 year school. I have a friend who did that because he had similar problems in high school as you, so I really think that's a good option if high school life doesn't really suit you.

College is overrated. I'd be making even MORE money now if I hadn't gone to college and just got a decent job and moved up. Now, I know some old **** is going to quote this and tell me how dumb I am, but I don't care. College is overrated.

What did you major in?

Haven't really thought about it too much, but I'd like to be something in law enforcement.

You want to at least finish high school and get your diploma. Doing that will at least give you a sense of accomplishment and eliminate regret later on. Some may not give you an opportunity at employment if you haven't graduated from high school. If you want a girlfriend it's going to be hard to get one if you can't land a decent job. Chicks like cash so that should motivate you some to start getting serious about your future.

You don't want to end up having to work at some carwash for tips or be stuck on a street corner holding a sign for handouts. If you take a hard look at that it can have a sobering affect. You can control your fate but some make the mistake of allowing fate to have a say. You never want to look back saying what if and be left with regrets. Some people dream their lives away instead of trying to live their dreams.

When you decide to grow up, then you should go back to school for the right reasons. Be respectful to people who are trying to help you. Work hard. Don't seek attention. Being immature on CZ is fun, and you're part of the community here. Being one in real life is just another way of saying the joke is on you.

Either way, asking if you should go back to school to play a game and find a girlfriend is not asking about going back to school. If you do grow up a bit and learn to take it seriously, and finish, you'll eventually end up way ahead of the path you're on right now, for what that's worth. That's easier said than done, though.

The goal is to go to college to learn what you need to learn to move up afterward. If you're just matching the pace of other workers who didn't have your advantage in having gone to school, then I hate to tell you, the problem isn't with college.

Hmm....I disagree. Unless you're an engineer, no one goes to college to learn anything particularly helpful in their career. The goal for college is simply to get into the best college you can get into (so you can have prettier resume) and then somehow manage to grow up and become an adult (barely) by the time it's over. The problem for most kids nowadays is that when they're 22 they still act like they're 16, so they're virtually unemployable or when they do get a job they screw it up and have no chance of upward mobility. This is largely because they've been told from day 1 that they're special and they can do whatever they put their mind to (not actually being told that "putting their mind to it" actually means really hard work and endless dedication/drive).

If you ever plan to be able to buy your own pair of Dre Beats, edumacation will be very important.

I'm a huge advocate for higher education. However, I also realize not everyone shares my thirst for knowledge.

School is what you make it, but I found that my more educational years were in my 3rd, 4th, and 5th years of undergrad, primarily because the focus was on the practical aspects of my major. I was a journalism major and I had a beat that I covered for class, as well as the school paper.

But just reading the post, I don't think school is really the best route for the OP. However, he should look into some sort of training, so that he can have skill set. Pick the right trade. Go forth and prosper, young man.

Alright so here's the deal. I've been home schooled for about 2 years now. It's ok I guess, but it gets pretty boring. I've been thinking about getting back into school. The only problem with that is I'd probably have to go back for another 2 years at least. I do this online program. I could probably finish it in 1, but I've been thinking graduating in two years versus one isn't much of a difference. The reason I started getting home schooled was simple. I was a ****ing clown in school. I would disrespect the teachers, disrupt the class, get in fights, and wouldn't do my work. I ended up having to repeat the 8th grade because of my antics. Main reason I wanna get back into school is because I wanted to play basketball in high school. I consider myself a pretty good player. Good rebounder, I can post up, decent shooter, my defense is not that good, but I know I can get better in that area. Also I could really use a girlfriend. Anyways what should I do?
If not school, get a G.E.D. and join the military..it seems like from your own statements you lack much of what the military would bring to you....or you can expect a long drive on the road of hard knocks my friend

My sentiments exactly. Get the high school diploma and then join the military. There, you will learn discipline and focus. You would also benefit from the comaraderie and have some great times (along with many difficult times).

I think consistently asking for advice here in the OT Zone isn't really such a good idea. These are things you should speak to your parents or your close family about, not some strangers on the internet.

Shhh. They are amusing.

Maybe my experience was different. I learned a lot about how to develop thoughts and about how to study in college. Maybe it was the philosophy minor. It also was essential for getting into graduate school, where I learned even more and which degree was necessary for the early part of my career.

90% of the time, either college or some other vacational/trade education is the way to go.
Maybe for you, it wasn't.

I have a brother that's a fisherman who makes >120k, and he didn't need a degree obviously. But for the most part, it is a huge advantage. All statistics show this, and it is moreson each generation.
In my family--including brothers, sister, cousins, nephews, nieces, etc (40+ people).....far, far and away the ones with degrees are doing better financially and in life.
There are exceptions though.

Exactly, college isn't for everyone but get some kind of trade, special training.
As a young adult I can see the differences between my group of friends. The ones with post secondary education are far better off or have a brighter future.
Compared to the others that still washing dishes. Career >Job
