Should the Cowboys draft a quarterback? - ESPN - Calvin Watkins

Ugh. That pesky little thing about wanting to win games always getting in the way if Watkins' articles!

Joe Montana " ? That's it ?

It's hilarious when people throw out historical facts to back up an argument without knowing the complete story behind them.

When Steve Young got traded to the SF 49ers in 1988, he was a broken player. Not only broken physically from the extreme pounding he took as a USFL starter for the LA Express ( my favorite team on that league ) and an even worse pounding with Tampa, but he was a mentally broken player. He was going to retire had the 49ers not stepped in and traded for him, which is why they got him for a song ( I believe a 2nd and 8th round pick ). It took him years just to get back to just to being a stable player, and during that time Bill Walsh wasn't completely sure he was going to make it back. He was so wild and so spooked from the hitting he previously received that he would try to run even on 7 on 7 drills in practice.

There's absolutely ZERO excuse for this team to even consider selecting a QB in the draft unless a bus runs over one of the currently 3 that are on the roster. Doesn't matter who he is and where he's available ( and skip the rediculous scenarios that surely are not going to happen ). It's obvious that people don't realize the commitment and investment that the position requires.

Just consider yourselves fortunate that your favorite team has a legit franchise QB who should be able to play for many years to come, a very capable player backing up the franchise QB, and potentially a " at least " very good project behind those 2. Stop trying to fix things that are NOT broken nor need any " tweaking ".

just pick up my guy Mitch Mustain as a FA

I put money on it he can bet out Mcgee

Lets see...

Romo will only be 31, which I believe means he'll have another 5 seasons in him. I could be wrong there but he hasnt started as long as others have so the wear and tear isn't there yet.

So there are those who want to ignore greater positions of need along the O-Line, the secondary, and D-line depth in order to draft a potential QB of the future whose going to ride the bench for 4-5 years?

I know it worked in Greenbay, and that would be fantastic if it worked out for us that way, but what happens if the guy you draft signs a 4 year deal and walks before Romo retires?

This team is close right now. I really believe that. We have needs now that can be fixed, and upgraded, to give us a shot at the trophy now.

No kiddin', and it wasn't even that way in Green Bay either. Brett Favre was 38 years old when Aaron Rodgers was drafted. That was a perfectly understandable move.

By the way, what worked in Green Bay didn't work in Denver. Ask Bronco fans about Tommy Maddox, who was drafted in the first round when " Mr. Ed " was 31 years old. How did that experiment worked out, Mr. Dan Reeves ?

I would like to know how Stephen McGee is doing, apparently it has been stated by Kitna that he has really improved this season even being on the scout team.

I've been suggestsing for some time now that mot NFL teams should carry 4 QBs.

That that should be the norm and only deviated on when a team has a very young star QB starting.

QB is too critical a position to not have multiple options going into every season. And not having at least one good starter is completely unacceptable.
No team or fanbase should ever have to endure that via a lack of planning and QB developement.

So basically I'm calling for a stable of QBs. Always looking to develop 2, while having 2 you feel good about playing going into every season.

So with that said, I would agree we could or should be in the market to draft a QB. However, given the status of the three we now have, I wouldn't see a need to go with anything other than a late rd pk.

OMT- 31 is the new 27 for today's NFL QB. With the improved medical treatment availible and all the no hitting the QB rules in place, a 31 yr old QB with Romo's ability can reasonably be expected to play into his late 30s

We don't need one. Romo has another 5-7 years left. You don't see SD or Green Bay drafting QBs. If we seriously draft another QB, I hope Tony demands a trade from this team so he can go win with a more competent franchise. When you have one a top superstar QB you use your picks to build around HIM. That's the problem with this team. We draft for years down the road and not for now.

Instead of increasing the "heat" in Romo's world I'd much rather try to make his job easier. Let's shore up that oline this offseason and if we take a flyer on any player in the 1st round that might fall to us I'd like to see it maybe be RB. Felix and Choice are great, but neither has emerged as an every-down, workhorse type back. And that's something I think could greatly benefit Romo at this point and help take a lot of the pressure off him. Let us not kid ourselves on how valuable a RB like that would be towards our young WRs also. What made Irvin, Irvin, was that everybody was eyes on Emmitt every play and their respective occupancy in 8-man fronts constantly. Bryant could turn into a literal beast, ala Irvin, if all eyes started relaxing off him and turning conscience onto a RB every play.

Maybe grab a QB mid-late rounds. If anything secure that QB coach spot with someone capable of turning water into wine. Would be a far greater investment for this team going forward then when the time comes hoping for a QB to be that all on their own. Without Norv Turner what is Aikman?

Exactly. The franchise QB position is one you DO NOT put pressure on. Especially on the QB that's consistently been one of the best in the league. It's amazing how Romo's out for a half season and some fans forget everything.

Last 5 years green bay has drafted 3 quaterbacks and San Diego drafted Whitehurst

Favre was already in his mid-late 30s by then. The Chargers drafted Whitehurst to be a backup and future trade bait. We have the franchise QB, we have the backup for probably another 2 years and we have McGee to take over the clipboard after that. We have the franchise QB. We need to start drafting to win while we're fortunate enough to have him.

So why can't we draft for trade bait or if Tony gets hurt. By the way Green Bay drafted Brian Brohm and Matt Flynn after Rodgers..

This team has serious gaping holes. If we don't start drafting for areas of need instead of future gambles, we are never going to win anything. We some of the top players in their positions in the league. If we don't start actually filling the gaping holes, people are going to keep wondering why we never improve.

So let me get this straight:

From the article itself, it doesn't matter that a 38 years old back up in his 14th season is showing RIGHT NOW the capabilities of playing at a high level at that age, the Cowboys should draft a QB because, and I quote:

Really, Watkins ? Are you really THAT stupid ?

Next:

Tony Romo is THE undisputed leader of the Dallas Cowboys, THE undisputed cornerstone of the Dallas Cowboys ( at worst, one of them ) and some of you guys want to bring " competition " ? and if Luck fell to the Cowboys in the first round they should take him ?

Next:

It's not enough that we have a franchise QB, we have arguably the best back up QB in the league, and we already have a project QB who's shown flashes and definitely potential, but some of you guys STILL want to draft yet another project QB ? It's bad enough that we cannot find, or refuse to, snaps to develop the current project we have, but we just " need to " add another one ?

".... Lord, grant me the serenity
To accept the things I cannot change;
Courage to change the things I can;
And wisdom to know the difference.... "

What you fail to comprehend is that your thinking is the same thinking Jerry used when Troy Aikman was 31, don't worry about the future, just worry about today, nevermind that Troy retired a year later and Dallas spend six years and numerous quartrbacks trying to find that franchise quarterback because they never planned for Aikmans replacement..and only found one by sheer luck, because a second round pick was too busy smokin pot all the time and was cut, or Romo wouldn't of made the roster that year....

Quaterbacks don't grow on trees, especially franchise ones and franchise quarterbacks take three years on average to comprehend and understand the schemes thrown at them in todays game, at which Romo would be 34-35 years of age. And only an idiot would argue that Romo is one of the best quaurerbacks in the league, he is NOT!!!! he has shown poor mechanics, poor decisions and sulking on the bench isn't a leader in my books

Kitna is 38, certainly doesn't mean he'll be as good next year as he was this year, see Brett Favre as an example, when your an older Qb,you lose your skills rapidly, it's not a gradual thing.. Greenbay got it right, Favre was in his prime, but they seen the value in Rodgers when they picked in the first round, your draft is for three years down the road, not today, that's how should be drafting, especially at QB, that's how you run a franchise and it was a smooth transition from Favre to Rodgers, who is an elite quarterback in this league.

Nobody is saying that Dallas should draft a quarterback in the first round, but if that's where the value is when we pick, then I'd rather take the value quarterback than reach for an offensive linemen in a draft where there isn't any top notch offensive linemen, but knowing that clown GM we have, Jerry Jones, he'd probably trade down for more late round picks

Best player available is the way to draft.. Did we need Dez last year? If the best player available is a position of need then its a homerun.. One year I think it was 90 we were real short at CB.. We drafted Goodrich, Larrimore and Edwards.. How about Quincy in the Second round.. Or Shante Carver..

So what you're saying is we're never going to fix the actual problems with this team then. We are in absolute desperate need of olinemen and safety help. We can't go another season without serious work/replacement in those areas. And yes, we did need Dez as WR is a possition where 2-3+ are on the field at a time and we needed a new #2 (or #1) with Roy floundering.

This is what I'm saying.. Were sitting at the 10th pick this year.. We have a obvious need for oline and safety help. The oline or safety prospects still on the board have late first or early second ratings.. Lets say a stud RB or qb is still on the board and nobody wants to trade up with you.. u take the best player.. Never reach for need especially early rounds..

You know, I don't buy this anymore. People also argued that the Cowboys couldn't win without Romo. If we win at Arizona we will be 4-2 without him.

Now, I haven't forgotten 1991 and the stupid arguments against Aikman based on the little Beurlein run. The schedule hit just right in 1991, they scaled back the game plan and played more defense oriented, and Beurlein just drove a bus.

So, I'm not arguing that Romo is not our guy. He is. But he is also going to be 31 next season. I think it is time to get a franchise QB, IF HE IS THERE to be taken. I certainly wouldn't force anything, but if the draft were to fall where a legitimate guy is there for us, I wouldn't pass on him.

If Jake Locker is there for us, I'd take him. (Because Luck won't be)

Great non-homer post.
