Should the Cowboys draft a quarterback? - ESPN - Calvin Watkins

We have bigger holes to fill. A QB shouldn't even be on the board. All you internet GM's make me :lmao2:

Quaterbacks don't grow on trees, especially franchise ones and franchise quarterbacks take three years on average to comprehend and understand the schemes thrown at them in todays game, at which Romo would be 34-35 years of age. Right Romo's not one of the best QBs in the league. That's why he's the 4th highest rated QB in NFL history, is 3 seasons away from almost every franchise record, has 3 probowls in 5 years, averages 4k yards and 27TDs, etc. Only an idiot would think he's NOT one of the best in the league because he is.

Are you smoking crack!

I pray to god that Romo goes to a team that will appreciate him, in fact I hope he wins at least two superbowls when he leaves. Just to spite these stupid idiots on this board.

I agree 100%. I'm starting hope Romo not only drops this team like a hot potato when his contract ends but wins multiple superbowls. He deserves it and almost any other team he goes to is going to appreciate him for being one of the top QBs. Not want him gone because the team sucks. We can then drop our 1st round pick on whatever the hot QB prospect is at the time that will likely not amount to half the QB Romo and people can want him gone too and we can repeat the process forever. Good times.

What you fail to comprehend is that your thinking is the same thinking Jerry used when Troy Aikman was 31, don't worry about the future, just worry about today, nevermind that Troy retired a year later and Dallas spend six years and numerous quartrbacks trying to find that franchise quarterback because they never planned for Aikmans replacement..and only found one by sheer luck, because a second round pick was too busy smokin pot all the time and was cut, or Romo wouldn't of made the roster that year....

Dude how many times can you spell quarterback wrong? lol

I sort of agree, however i think Romo is anywhere from a top 5-8 QB when he's on and healthy. However he's taken a beating physically over the past 3 seasons and he's also had to pay for Jerry's terrible decisions as General Manager. IF we can take a qb with some upside around the 2-4th round then i'll pull the trigger. If the Romo injuries continue and it becomes more apparent that he's on his way out of the league i want someone to turn to as QB of the future. Not 40 yr old Kitna or project qb Mcgee if he's even on the team next season.

i am very confident that mcgee will be a very capable backup here.

Why would you want Romo to leave?
What have the Cowboys done to make you think they don't appreciate him?

One hole of an *** fan on crack claims he sucks and you now think he's not appreciated.

I don't want him gone in terms of what he does for this team. I'm just getting sick of the crap in both the media and the vocal minority of fans. It's never ending. I also think he deserves a superbowl and I don't think he's going to get one here as this organization doesn't seem to want to focus on improving the current team or doing anything to keep him off the turf.

I agree. And it isn't just this post or one fan. I want Romo to stay and win a few for us but if he leaves I hope he wins big time

<homer-status> Yes, they should draft Trevor Vittatoe! </homer-status>

Exactly. The franchise QB position is one you DO NOT put pressure on. Especially on the QB that's consistently been one of the best in the league. It's amazing how Romo's out for a half season and some fans forget everything.

I realize that this is a commonly held belief, but I'm skeptical. Morton and White didn't ruin Staubach. Young didn't ruin Montana.

I don't think that Romo's psyche is so fragile that he'd be ruined by competition. He's a competitive guy.

As far as drafting a QB this time is concerned, I think you do it only if he's clearly the BPA at the time of the pick and you think he's got a much higher ceiling than McGee. .... McGee is likely the odd man out if a QB is drafted.

You know, I don't buy this anymore. People also argued that the Cowboys couldn't win without Romo. If we win at Arizona we will be 4-2 without him.

Now, I haven't forgotten 1991 and the stupid arguments against Aikman based on the little Beurlein run. The schedule hit just right in 1991, they scaled back the game plan and played more defense oriented, and Beurlein just drove a bus.

So, I'm not arguing that Romo is not our guy. He is. But he is also going to be 31 next season. I think it is time to get a franchise QB, IF HE IS THERE to be taken. I certainly wouldn't force anything, but if the draft were to fall where a legitimate guy is there for us, I wouldn't pass on him.

If Jake Locker is there for us, I'd take him. (Because Luck won't be)

Someone might have pointed this out already but we are 4-4 without Romo now. We will be 5-4 if we beat the cards without Romo. I think people forget about the Jac andGB games. Lol. I know I try to. Lol. JG record is 4-2 not the Cowboys without Romo.

It depends on how you feel about this team. Do you think this team is really as bad as 1-7 or is this team really as good as 4-2? Maybe its me being a homer but I feel the latter is more accurate of how good this team is and so if you feel that way you better not look at quarterback until the 5th round. If Jake Locker or Andrew Luck happen to fall to the 2nd round i'd trade up to get them but I doubt either one of those guys or Cam Newton fall out of the 2nd round.

Only two types of teams draft a QB early.

Teams that suck and have none or teams with very few holes that can afford to "waste" a pick for the future.

We are neither.

What we have is a very good starter, a capable back up, and a developmental guy that showed a little something last preseason, and are about 4 or 5 players and a new DC away from challenging for a title.

Now if Kitna looked like Brad Johnson part 2 and we had enough faith that McGee could be our back up than I could see it...that is not the case.

If a QB falls trade back for more picks. Other than a CB or DE none of our needs are at a value at 9-13 anyway.

Ah, thanks for the correct. My only point is that the team didn't crater.

As I've already said. Romo is our guy. He is a top tier QB. I just like planning for the future at the same time.

And some of the fans on this board need to get a grip. I really think some of them are more Romo fans than Cowboys fans. You want him to leave and win multiple Super Bowls? He deserves that?

Good grief.

He injured his shoulder he don't throw with and in the past had an injury like to the pinky that put him out like 4 to 6 weeks... Im with getting Cam Newton 6-6 260... He is elusive and he has a great arm. He lead the NCAA in rushing a passing touchdowns... and he's a leader and a winner.

Depends on if this team thinks that with a good draft and decent free-agency success, that the team can win now or not.

IF the underlying thought of coaches, scouts, GM/Owner is we can't win by plugging 5-6 major holes (because we have 4-6 major holes, and only that many if we resign a few of our own free-agents AND assume Dez and Lee can stay healthy and continue to improve).......well, IF the thought is "NO" we still aren't going to be competitive for a title, then if a QB falls to us that we have highly rated, I'd say take him and groom him behind Romo and Kitna for a few years.

IF the team believes it can return to competitiveness quickly (which I think they will convince themselves of) then you need to use your early round picks on CB, Oline, Safety, and even the dreaded ILB (although I'd like to try FA to fill that whole even if it means more Brooking type veterans on downside of career).

Nothing wrong with developing a talented young QB for a year or two. Romo could get hurt or retire - said he wouldn't play forever. Kitna has a couple of years left. McGee I guess they aren't sure of, but he seems like the project you want at 3rd QB - someone that is showing a little something and is proving consistent progress. Add another QB into the mix and then you need to carry 4 or get rid of one of Kitna or McGee. Might be a year early I guess.

I'm guessing we would trade down with a team desperate for a QB if one dropped to us that was highly ranked - too many other more pressing needs to fill.
