I'd be OK with trading up if we can use Romo to do it. I'm against giving up picks.
That's my thinking on a trade up. Trading picks to move up I don't like but trading romo in a way that gets us farther up the board saves the rest of your picks.

I want Dallas to trade up. I don't care who they pick, they just need to trade up because I'm tired of not winning playoff games. I also want them to sign free agents. I don't care who, just sign somebody. And while we're at it, our DLine all needs to be cut. I don't know who will replace them, but we need to cut the bums. Rodgers had all day to throw against us. Who cares if his OLine was blatantly holding, we didn't get any pressure. Cut. The. Bums. While we're at it, fire Garrett. He's obviously never going to be any good. And Marinelli. He's too old. Let's just start over. I don't care if we were 13-3 last season, we were just one of the losers who didn't win the Super Bowl. We'll never win with this DLine, coaching staff, FO. Or we'll never win without signing big names.

Let's say we get an offer for Romo to trade up from 28 to just Denver's spot at 20. The draft value of that trade is 170 points, which is equivalent to the 20th pick of the third round (or the 84th pick).

Obviously, I would like to get more for Romo, but if there's a player we want at 20, I'd have no problem trading him in order to secure that player.

If trading up is because someone is falling that McClay and Garrett and Stephen have as in the top ten picks on OUR board then sure, I could live with that but that guy would really have to be a difference maker type guy. Doing the math say we have roughly a 1000 points to trade according to the trade chart which is only going to get you to roughly 15th or 16th spot, then we would have to assume someone like Jonathan Allen or Jamal Adams or Malik Hooker or Solomon Thomas has fallen to those spots and that the Eagles or Ravens want to trade with us. Lots of parts would have to fall into place so would I trade up, yes maybe, it just doesn't mean it is possible.

Frankly, depending how the draft falls, I could see us trading down more than up. Say Cleveland doesn't land a QB in free agency or with the 1st or 12th picks in the draft, they could very well be willing to give up more like say the 33rd and 52nd picks to get the 28th pick since it cares that 5th year option and if Dallas has 5 or 6 guys at 28 all rated close if not the same then I could see us trading down.

Because the DE you would get by trading up 5 or 6 spots won't be any better than the one you can get at 28. Additionally you lose a later pick than can be used on defense.

The Cowboys don't have a 5th now so if they give up a 3rd or 4th to move up they would only be getting 3 players in the first 5 rounds. Not good!

Potentially true, but, again, we have no clue how the draft will go and who may fall so I don't see how anyone could say for certain what the best move would be until draft day comes along. If Dallas has a player graded as DeMarcus Ware 2.0 and he falls to a reasonable range then of course they will explore trading up. If all they are graded similar then of course they will stay put.

Maybe get our 5th back too
A way to better your position without giving up picks. Works for me

With 6 of the Dallas free agents being considered in the top 100 rated for this free agency, lower picks will have to hit cap needs and quality...again this year. With the success of last season, Dallas will be behind the 8 Ball for both Free Agency and the Draft. Sorry.
