Should we be looking at any of these current free agents?

Don't have to make any decisions on the 53 until the season is almost ready to start. For now, the only sacrifice is a UDFA. I like Freeney's chances of giving us something more than any one of the UDFAs. No brainer to me, but reality is, it's been very rare that Jones & Jones Inc. call me for advice... hence our lack of Super Bowl appearances all these years. *wink*

Well, my point was you deny someone the opportunity to make the team and hopefully become a long term contributor. You admitted that. On your side is you have a known commodity albeit an aging one whom you don't know can play at a high level or not. It's a reasonably complicated decision tree.

Seems clear they aren't interested in older, high priced players. Maybe is a young player who they see some long term potential gets cut at some point they may add a guy but don't think any 30 yr old players are going to be added unless there is an injury to one of our guys. A guy like freeney could help but who do you cut to make room for him?

Like any pecking order, there's someone in that group of UDFAs who was a borderline call, and they went ahead and took a flyer on him. I'm not inclined to think there'd be a problem there (ie, figuring out who to cut in order to sign Freeney), but maybe that's just me.

You can't build a team on aging veterans, but you can sprinkle in one or two whose role is defined. And to the assertion that there's no interest, May 12 just passed... pretty sure Freeney's stats from last season would have demanded compensatory pick had he been signed before. True, no activity yet, but I wouldn't make any assumptions this soon after the deadline.

They had Hall in I believe and chose not to sign him.

You hear rumors about O’Brien Schofield.

Hall isn't signed because of money & age, he could still be serviceable to a team if he came down on his price tag a little.

Is Whitner completely washed up at this point? I haven't seen him play in awhile while in CLE tbh. Maybe stop gap SS or comp for Church? I know the Browns were terrible...:D Just think we need more speed @ SS and Wilcox proved to not be that guy. Wouldn't give much more than vet min. obv to anyone maybe outside of Hall (even then).

Freeney is 36. That's old.

But "washed up?"

What he did in sacks last season would have tied for our team lead.

What's more, he did what he did in 11 games, not 16 like our team leader in sacks.

To be fair, one never knows when an aging player is going to hit a cliff, and see his stats nosedive, but for now, I'd be really slow to think Freeney has nothing to contribute... especially in our situation.

I'd drop a journeyman player like Jack Crawford in a heartbeat to sign Freeney.

On one hand, everyone knows that this team's biggest weakness is pass rush, and yet they can't bear to let go of anyone on the roster for a proven performer?

Where's the logic in that?

Freeney played in 11 games last year and had 8 sacks, which would have tied for the best on this team. Sign him up, and use him wisely in obvious passing situations until you find another option, one you don't have now.

Exactly right. Even at the end of his career, he's better than this team' current options. They've signed 'bridge players' before and Freeney could be another one.

I laugh every time I see that sig photo... but now that I think about it, why not?... first game every season, how bout a tradition that Garrett or whoever is the head coach dresses in tribute to Coach Landry...

Our Dline consists of a bunch of low level draft picks and UDFAs and two second rounders which are suspended.

  • Ryan Russell was projected to be a 6th or 7th rd pick that we took in the 5th. For his college career he a had 8 sacks total. Yes, 8 in 3 years. That's highly unproductive.
  • David Irving was a UDFA that signed with Kansas City. We signed him off their practice squad.
  • Mayowa same scenario. Practice squad guy we signed from Oakland.
  • Casey walker has been on 4 teams since 2013 at the college level he produced 47 tackles and 1 sack in 4 years
Ok I don't see how some people are getting excited with this line. It's young but unproven at both collegiate and NFL levels. Basically they never did anything anywhere.

We need to stop lying to ourselves. One man's trash is another man's treasure? Or is trash simply trash.

Anquan Boldin is the only vet I would seriously consider because he would take Devin Streets roster spot.

I would love Freeney but like it's been pointed out let's develop Tapper, Gregory, Irving, and Mayowa.

Wouldn't mind a Vet DT competing with McClain and Coe to backup Thornton but I'm hoping Coe has what it takes to win the spot.

The only guys id entertain that's left in FA is Freeney and/or Jason Jones. But Jones will be a Dolphin as of tomorrow. And Freeney is ancient in football terms, so that excludes him from coming to Dallas and sucking up an enventual injury settlement. I get the concern ab our DL, as I am too.. But at this point, I'd rather give the young guys a chance to see what they can do because we have talent whether fans want to believe that or not. If Marenilli can get 8 sacks out of Selvie, then he'll be able again. Side note: I also believe Hardy was a bigger Cancer than we know and negatively influenced a few players. Which is why Garrett was so irritated with questions ab him and also why Dallas has been vertuately mum all offseason. And if he wasn't, then why wouldn't a DE deprived team like Dallas not want him back..not to mention, any other team.
