Should we draft a RT?

The rationale to moving Collins over to RT was the sudden retirement of Free. On top of that, Leary went the FA route. Of all the internal FA's we've let walk, letting Leary go was the "one that got away" but should have been signed. I think 90% of the fans were in favor of that. We blew that one.. Suddenly it was juggle, here, juggle there, patch here, patch there, try this cheap FA or that. Hellz bellz we even gave Greener a chance. That's desperation!

The problem now becomes Collins wanting T money which is typically more than G money. Just me but if I'm Inspector Columbo I'm moving Collins back to LG, Williams to RT and drafting a G or T who can step in when Collins get's T money in FA. I would look at resigning Flemming as the swing T and we have Eihringer for another year as swing G. Looney as C/G. It's unfortunate that both Eihringer and Marcus Martin were lost for the season so early. There are some answers that NEED to be answered on this O-line and we can't wait for another injury, another loss in FA. Better be progressive on this one
You think we should've paid an OG w/ degenerative knees 9 mill/season? How do you rationalize that?

Good points. Leary was a cap casualty. We let him walk (a player we wanted) in large part due to being tight against the cap. If cap was not a consideration he would probably still be a Cowboy.

We have some cap room right now for the first time in a while. We also have several big time players coming up that are going to get a chunk of that cap. Dak, Zeke, Amari, Tank, Jaylon and a couple of others. While we can sign all of these guys if we want to, (and also sign Beasley) we can't overpay them and also not lose someone on down the road we want to keep like Leary.

I would like to see us keep all except Beasley (unless he's CHEAP) but I don't want to see any of those guys paid top 5 money if they aren't top 5. Right now the only sure fire top 5 guy on that list is Zeke. We should not overpay for any of those guys.
Leary hasn't done all that well, and there are rumors his career might already be over. Played 11 games and went out w/ injury after his huge contract. He then started 6 games last season before going down.

This team makes a lot of mistakes concerning players, but they got this one right.

How do I rationalize it? It's not my money lol. I think he's still playing and an achilles tear, not a knee, did him in in 2018. I suppose $9 mill/season is on the high side. Hey, the Broncos got a damned good G that's all I know and we lost one.

I feel Collins is a better G than T. He has been OK at RT, but he struggles with his footwork against good pass rushers and looks bad in doing so. I wouldn't invest in him at RT with a second contract.
They should move him to LG.

We need more leverage at the center of the line.

Less footwork to be worried about and smaller area to worry about.

Additionally..Gs make less than Ts.

If they want to resign him..make it less costly.

That doesn't make sense. The salary cap is always a concern when discussing which players to keep/release. On a personal note, I'm glad Leary got a good chunk of money, good for him. As a Dallas Cowboys fan, I'm really glad we aren't the ones who paid him.

So, why do you think we should've spent a large chunk of our salary cap on an OG who has injury issues and not much mobility?

JMO but I think it's a pay for play league. Play well, get payed well and injuries haven't been a big issue with him. Every year the pay get's ratcheted up a notch. I think our O-line play fell off markedly when Leary left as a FA and Free retired. That was my original comment. Then the experimentation and shuffle. I suppose Tyrons back issues have played in to that as well, so hard to say the O-line performance fall off was due to Leary's departure.

It's a dead horse issue. I would have liked to see the Cowboys sign him, they didn't. If we had kept him I suppose Collins would still have moved over to RT to replace Free anyway. Also a possibility that we'd be looking for Leary's replacement this year too. He will be 30 this year. All good ksk

Connor has the physical talent to be probably the best RT on the roster. No need to make another draft choice with him already in house.

I would tell LC to slim down if he wants to compete for a T position next season.

I would mix and match all through out off-season to find out what combination makes the best line. Forget what egos and draft position indicate, make everyone compete at different positions, who knows there might just be a revelation.

Once you settle on that, then get down to find tuning.

Yep everybody "earns" everything. Every year, for that matter. At every position. Training Camps should be all about positional competition. There should be no sense of entitlement based on being the incumbent from the previous year at a particular position.
Competition breeds success in my eyes. Nice post, I totally agree and just took it a step further to include the whole team and not just the o-line.

Absolutely. However, due to the salary cap, money must be spent wisely. You must not and cannot "just pay him" as so many scream to do. We've already tried that route and it all fell apart, largely to not having adequate backups due to lack of salary cap rooms. Poor drafting didn't help.

Which means you think we need a different HC. OK, I can agree w/ that.

I say yes. Give him one year as a "swing tackle" since La'el Collins is on the last year of the 2 year, $15M deal he signed last year. He don't seem like the long-term solution. He's killed drives with his false starts or holding too much for my liking.

He's an UFA next year. Time to cut bait with this dude.

I've been saying I go OL in this draft and DT, Safety and TE free agency

I don't think we resign Collins next year whether he moves to guard or stays at RT. We're paying three OL starters top money. If we don't want to shortchange other position groups, we have to go cheap at LG and RT.

Drafting one feels likely.
I think Williams can be RT and then draft LG. You have Sua-Filo and Looney to play LG if needed plus Marcus Martin will be back healthy.

Hey, I know!!!! Let's trade back and get us some STers!!!! That worked in 09, right?

Yea that was a h--- of a draft. A wasted draft. We might as well not participated in that draft cannot remember one player in that dumpster fire of a draft.
