SI Breer: Shotty could be a better head coach than coordinator

I think he, and the entire coaching staff will be much better than expected. Most fans saying he is just another puppet.
From what we seen so far, he is not. There will be a learning curve, for Brian, and his staff, as well as the players and as usual the rookies.

Will that translate into winning the NFCE, making the playoffs. Yes, wait and see, it is all we can do.
But it does make this off-season much more exciting and to look forward to the season. Not expecting miracles.

This is no where the same nor is it an analogy. Kind of reminds me of when Jimmy and Jerry took over, and made changes, and a lot of them to build those SB teams. But from a fans standpoint, gives us something to look forward to, though we know there is a ways to go yet as well. Big difference is now though. Jerry is more set in his dilemma of doing it his way, but seems to be giving Brian a lot of leeway for his own staff, and player acquisition.
Maybe the players need a relaxed underdog goofball
Coach and not a try hard teacher pet like
McCarthy and Garrett

I agree. Being a leader of the entire squad is very different than being a coordinator.

How many great coordinators have failed at HC? Many. The opposite is also possible.

The problem in this case is no one can overcome the Jerry factor. No one. There’s no way to command that locker room as long as he continues to do undermining things because he has to be in the spotlight.

I'm willing to give Schott the benefit of the doubt until he proves otherwise. He is the man, he is here now, we can't change that. Can't do anything (legal) about ownership and how it acts. As a fan, just gotta hope he does a good job and brings respect and glory back to the team we are cheering for. We all knew it was going to take a lot of changes to turn this thing around, and so far we've seen a lot, maybe not everything we've hoped for, but still, I believe progress, not regress. If you are unwilling to accept this, there are 31 other teams to root for.

We will learn a great deal about all the coaches in the first game.
When Philly starts running on us, what will Flus do to stop it. Will he sacrifice in other areas and do anything and everything to stop the run, or will he be like Quinn and just keep running the same thing over and over, stubbornly.
When Philly gets a 2 score lead on us and the run game is struggling and Booker gets called for a couple of penalties, will Shotty abandon the run game and start calling pass after pass until Dak has thrown the ball 35-40 times? Or will he stay the course and hope the offense finds a groove in the 4th quarter, or at least finds something to build on in game 2?

We all want to win that first game vs. Philly, but in reality, it shouldn't happen; they are the better team. I want to see if these coaches do something different when the better team starts playing like the better team. If Flus allows Philly to run it down our throats in fear of the pass game beating us on big plays, and if Shotty has Dak throw 40 passes, putting him at risk, putting the OL in a bind, and neglecting balance in his first game as coach, then they will lose a little credibility with fans and in the locker room.

yeah, its all sunshine and rainbows right now, but this is the easy part. We are likely to get punched in the mouth early this year with Philly being game 1. How the coaching staff get the team to respond to some of that adversity is going to tell us 80% of what we need to know.

..we have no choice but hope this is true. McCarthy couldn't do it even with very good teams at hand.

I suppose good/great coaches win when it counts. Having seen that, in LONG>>>>> time..

My only concern is can he do both now. Calling the offense and being the HC is a lot of work.
I share in this concern of yours. I don't believe a HC has to call plays. More important is to set the culture of PERFORMANCE.

Culture: "The way you do things in a group of individuals."

Performance: "The act of execution to accomplish something."

I see a HC's job as setting and maintaining the culture of performance in the achievement of the goals the entire group has agreed upon - the SuperBowl.

Calling plays will take away Schotty's ability to keep his finger on every single player and coach in the organization. He has to let coaches coach and players play, but they all have to know that if they underperform he is going to go all Bill Parcells/Belichick/Jimmy Johnson on them.

He can be their friend, but they need to know he is their friend with a stick when needed and carrots when needed.

Jerry has this fan base grasping for any grain of positivity....I guess 30 years will do that to you. A mediocre OC is now going to become the savior at HC....that's a new take at least.

When it comes to Shotty at this point in the year, everyone is gonna stick by their opinion because they want to be right. For those that think Shotty sucks they can't be sold otherwise. I'm not a fan of the hire and not sure if I ever will be, but I like what he's done. There are no games played. There is nothing he can do now other than what he knows. And IMO, he's said all the right things and he's tried to fix things. Can't be upset about that.

I mean its not a terrible take. How good of an OC was Doug Pederson before winning his ring? Or Siranni? Or Coughlin

Coughlin came to the NFL after being a Head Coach at Boston College. He took expanion Jacksonville to playoffas nad won 2 SBs with the Giants. He had pedigree already.

Pederson at least called plays for Andy Reid at KC and was a long time QB in the NFL.....

Sirriani may be the closest to this Schotty guy.

All i'm saying is none of those guys were known as these mastermind coordinators......

And while a lot of those Shanahan guys like Lafelur, McVey and Shanahan get a lot of credit.....there are a lot of other wiz kids off that true that didn't do anything.

I'm not a fan of Shotty by any means. Nothing against the guy, I just don't know anything about him and would've preferred a real search. I'm just thinking of guys off the top of my head who weren't known as a great OC or DC and won a ring...John Harbaugh was a special teams coordinator if i'm not mistaken. I think the list is longer then we think.
