I disagree. I fall back on Jack Del Rio. He was pretty light on coaching experience before being offered the Jax position, but he was hired. And Jax actually took a lot of heat for hiring him over less established candidates. Which I'm sure Pitt will get even more for the reasons we're discussing in this thread.

Del Rio had a part in a Super Bowl staff with Baltimore. The situations are nothing alike. I would consider even Dave Campo more qualified when he was hired than Tomlin.

I won't complain. This is very good for the Steelers. [evil laugh]

He simply does not have the resume as some others. He's never been a head coach on any level, has only six years of NFL coaching experience and has only been a coordinator for a year in the NFL.

Change the color of his skin and he probably doesn't even get an interview.

You could have said the exact same thing about Eric Mangini and Mike McCarthy last year.

Was Tomlin not on staff when the Bucs got their SB? Could just as easily say he had something to do with their championship run as did Del Rio.

As for Dave Campo, he was technically more qualified if we're going on years of league experience and the fact that Campo had been a coordinator longer.

I don't hate the Steelers like some here do and I don't know whether this is a good hire or not. We'll find out soon enough, I'm sure.

Tomlin was on the Bucs' staff when they won the Super Bowl.

I am pretty cynical. I happen to think that since so much was made of the Rooney Rule, that there was a lot of pressure on them to step up and hire a minority. SO frankly I think that his skin color has just as much to do with his getting the job as his qualifications- which frankly are not that great.

Well, I'm sure the actual interview had something to do with his hiring. And to be frank, since the Steelers organization actually interviewed Tomlin and you didn't, I'm inclined to believe that they hired the guy they thought was the best (which is the whole purpose of interviewing for a job right?!)

The problem with your assumption is that Tomlin isn't the only minority coaching candidate in the league.

If all they wanted to do was hire a minority, why'd they pick Tomlin over other minorities with "stronger resumes" like Ron Rivera, Jim Caldwell, Ray Rhodes, Mike Singletary, Norm Chow, Tim Lewis, and Dennis Green -- all of whom are either former NFL head coaches or were interviewed by at least one team for a head coaching position this year.

In my experience people will say anything in a job interview.

And-How.

What someone says in an interview means very little I've come to realize over the past 20 years.
