SI NFL head coaching candidates to watch

Matt Rhule intrigues me. Not sure he’s on the Cowboy’s radar, but his name has popped up within the local media.

Jones did bring his name up specifically during a recent Q&A while being asked about Lincoln Riley coaching a game at Cowboys stadium. Had glowing praise for him.

Mike McCarthy will be a HC next year...………...too many reports about him having the "itch" and that he needs it.

I'm not so sure. It said a lot to me how little interest he received when he became available. I think there's a lot of negative talk around him and how he finished with the Packers.

I think it's ranked like this right now for the next Cowboys head coach:
  1. Urban Meyer
  2. Ron Rivera
  3. Lincoln Riley (who stays at Oklahoma)
  4. Matt Rhule
And when I consider all factors, I keep thinking it will ultimately be Rivera.
If it's Rivera my bet is Moore would stay on as OC.

You may have a point...…..seemed like a classic power struggle between Star QB and HC

Agreed.

If it is ultimately Rivera, I'd be willing to bet that most of the offensive staff would be retained. Like most coaches these days, Rivera is a 'one side of the ball' guy. He knows defense, and needs someone to handle the other side of the ball. When he doesn't have that, he and his teams struggle (Payton has that too). So it wouldn't surprise me if he listened to the Joneses' suggestions and kept several of the offensive coaches in place while he focused on fixing the defense and special teams. And honestly that wouldn't be the worst idea.

No Lt. Dan?

That would be a meaningless change. Rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

I would say Matt Eberflus may be higher than all on this list.

You're referring to Rivera specifically?

Yes. I don't think he has the kind of respect to make the Owner compromise to get him here.

That's why I think any and all first time head coaches wouldn't work here either. They will get walked on by this Owner.

I completely disagree. In fact, I don't think Eberflus wants anything to do with this organization, at any level.

I will take that bet. I think he will be one of the first people to interview here.

He is such a perfect Jerry candidate. He already knows how things run here, He won't change anything on the defense, I bet he will allow jerry to keep a bunch of the assistants in place like Moore and Kitna.

He was here for a long time and understands the local media and playing these big primetime games in the east so there will be no adjustment to that.
