With the Tampa Bay Buccaneers required to cut five players and with five quarterbacks on the roster, Chris Simms hopes to finally get his freedom.

He didn’t play in Saturday night’s preseason game after making appearances in the first two.

“I’m not uneasy about the situation at all,” Simms said, according to Pewter Report. “Whatever the powers that be . . . we shall see. I’m a poet.”

Though the Bucs had been trying to deal the former starter to a new team, he doubts that it will occur. “I don’t think I’m going to get traded,” Simms said. “I don’t envision that happening, but at the same time, I’ll get a shot somewhere.”

Said coach Jon Gruden: “We won’t keep five [quarterbacks] and it will be hard to say goodbye to somebody. We tried our best and we’ll let you know what happens.”

The other four signal-callers on the roster are Jeff Garcia, Brian Griese, Luke McCown, and rookie Josh Johnson.

Should be a given. A good third, probably a second starting next year.

So once released, can he sign w/ anyone he chooses or does he have to clear waivers first?

WAIVER WIRE. Generally, any released player with four (4) or less credited seasons is placed on waivers at 4 PM on the date he is officially released, if said release is before 4 PM. Any team can submit claims for any of the recently waived players (note a released player with more than 4 credited seasons is deemed to be "released" rather than "waived"). When a player is claimed by more than one team, then the team with the worst record in the 2002 NFL regular season will be awarded the player (and assume the provisions of his contract). If the 2002 records of two or more clubs who claim the same player are identical, then additional tie breakers are used to determine to which team the player is allocated. Note if a team is awarded a player, then the club will most likely have to release a player currently on their roster in order to not exceed the previously noted 53 man roster limit.

I agree, he will be released and clear waviers.

I wouldn't be so sure about him clearing waivers.

He's been in the league long enough to be released not waived.

Morning Pops

OH!!!!:) My reading skills are very suspect this morning.

Good Morning Yeag.

This is Simms 6th season so he should be released and free to go where he wants. Welcome to Dallas.

Leftwich looked pretty good for the steelers

I don't know why we didn't look at leftwich at all

If he does become a Cowboy, it's a move for next year. I just don't see him getting enough reps to pick up the offense.

Because he's garbage. Glad he signed with the Steelers.

I could see New England being interested in Simms too; an experience backup to go with Brady.... and then they have the rookie to develop.

Probably for the same reason the rest of the league didn't also, he isn't that good.

I think he is a pretty good qb, slow delivery but he gets into his windup quick and throws a laser. Screams good backup QB to me. He looked good for pittsburgh and that was with scrubs around him.
