Despite the fact that Dallas was torched by Peyton Manning, the problem wasn't really the corners, but the safeties and linebackers. It also appeared the corners were at their best when they were allowed to play press man, which is supposed to be Carr and Claiborne's strength anyway.

So it appears to me that Dallas might be better off running a base of press man with Claiborne and Carr with a single-high safety and running bracket coverage on the better receiver between the tight end and running back since neither our safeties or our linebackers have proven able to consistently match up man-to-man with other teams' tight ends and running backs.

Wait this insinuates we actually put a LB or a safety on the RB.... From what I've seen no one covers the RB in this defense. We just let them run around freely.

That same formation use to get us killed back in the day. I'll pass. will give up to many long passing plays.

Is that better or worse than 7-9 shorter passing plays that also result in a TD?

That's a good point.

I have my doubts that the current personnel on defense can play a true zone defense from front to back. The linebackers simply do not get it and it takes the corners from doing what they do best.

I'm not sure a man-under with one safety up high is the ultimate answer. Probably a combination of man-under with some sort of deep help (1, 2, or 3) playing in a zone. Playing man-under would help eliminate some of the zone breakdowns and would better take advantage of the athleticism of the linebackers.

Barry Church had one of the worst coverage displays I've ever seen. Our scheme had Ernie Sims playing Wes Welker on third and sixteen from the seventeen with them down a touchdown. How do you not go to a dime defense?

Carr played GREAT. He only gave up 57 yards to D T and most of that was on illegal picks. Oscan was even better. That is the best game I have seen him play. You could live with mo and lee in coverage. Church and the will were awful. Wilcox was a ghost. But some of that is by design. That was the same formula in San Diego.

Seems to be a lot of internal debate on how good in pass coverage Church has been. I know the PFF numbers for Church has him as a top 10 safety, however, frankly, I'm just not seeing very active at all in the passing game.

sounds good but they dont have the safety that can play the single high. Im sure they had plans for Allen to be that guy and he looked it early in camp. But we know what happened from then on.

Church was awful vs the Broncos per PFF... registering a -2.9.

If Wilcox had the experience he would be a potential "single-high" safety. He has the athleticism for the job.

Probably worst. More plays equal more opportunity in forcing a turnover of causing a mistake. I take my chances with a team having to sustain long drives rather than giving up 6 on a single play. NO repeats of Santana Moss back in the day, im good....

If you watch him specifically, you can see that he's the same player Church is. And thats not bad. He'll eventually push church to the bench or trade. But he isnt the single high center field type of Safety the Cowboys need. Wilcox is a hitter tackler defend the flats type of player.

You have to run compound coverages and zone blitzes in this league. The quarterbacks are too smart. You can't throw them the same coverage on majority of plays. They will absolutely eat you alive. Unfortunately, our defense is as predictable as our offense usually is. We are a down and distance team. We don't dictate, we allow ourselves to be dictated to.

It's shocking to me that, as much havoc as he seems the cause, we don't rush Bruce Carter on first and second down more often. The few times we stopped/slowed Manning on Sunday seemed to come on Bruce Carter blitzes. Then again, that leaves even fewer players to occupy the middle...

I think Church needs to be used like the Seahawks use Chancellor. More of a box safety. Problem is, we need Wilcox to be like Earl Thomas. He could do it, but it will take some time.

I think Bruce Carter can become a force blitzing. Von Miller type speed and quickness in a bigger frame. I agree single high would more fit our personnel.

Never meant to say we shouldn't run compound coverages, just that our base should be single-high because that appears to best fit the strengths (and weaknesses) of the secondary and linebackers.
