Could Mike Holmgren be the next coach of the Cowboys? (USATSI)
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones gave embattled coach Jason Garrett a vote of confidence last week, saying he would remain on the job through the 2014 season. But around the league, that's being met with a fair amount of skepticism pending the way the Cowboys finish the season.

Garrett's tenure has not included playoff success, he is no longer calling plays on offense and the defensive staff that was put together is under immense scrutiny with that unit historically bad. The Cowboys have lost the division lead to the Eagles and if they stumble down the stretch Jones' peers are expecting him to pursue other options. He has been very loyal to Garrett and he fits the mold of the kind of coach who is OK with the unique front-office paradigm in Dallas -- with Jones as owner and general manager -- but another weak finish could clearly lead to changes in Big D.

Many experienced head coaches would be unwilling to operate under those circumstances but sources continue to maintain that former Packers and Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren has a good relationship with Jones and would not have reservations about a job like the Cowboys. He and Jones spent years together on the competition committee, and other bigger names, like Jon Gruden, would not be a fit with Jones.

A vote confidence means nothing in either direction.

What did Holmgren do in Cleveland? The Cowboys don't need retread coaches, IMO.

That is an old picture too. If it wasn't shot this week(wasn't), it means nothing.

Yeah, wasn't that like 3 years ago?

I still find it amusing when reporters/people say certain head coaches would never play for Jerry, when we had one of the biggest control freak head coaches ever that coached here and has said nothing but good things about him since.

Holmgren as GM is not Holmgren as HC...

Give Romo a West-Coast offense...

Anything to remain relevant. Actually I would support Holmgren as HC. At least he's got skins on the wall.

Every day is different. So I refuse to think that the next day is worthless because of the day before.
that being said, it's been feeling like groundhog day in dallas for awhile.

I'm not too excited about the possibility of Holmgren being in Dallas either.

Who would you pick? A proven coach like Holmgren would be a big improvement.

Historically, the success of retread NFL Head Coaches is not good.

I would look for a College Head Coach that has had some experience as an assistant in the NFL if Garret were fired; although, I don't think that will happen.

I wouldn't mind Holmgrem at all. If not for some of the most bias officiating in the history of the game he would have two Superbowl wins with two different teams. He is a good coach, of course just about anyone could do better than the idiot who holds the position right now.

As long as Jerry Jones is the GM for the Dallas Cowboys ,The cowboys will NEVER win the NFC east or win a playoff game.

They have already done both of those things. Do you mean "never again"? Still, that seems a foolish prediction since all it takes to win the division is beat out three other bad teams.

College coaches have not done that well when coming to the pros. Everybody wants to find the hot college coach or genius Asst. but this team needs an experienced NFL coach IMO due to the poor GM.

Is the history of retread NFL coaches any better than college coaches coming to the NFL? How are we measuring success?

I'm not disagreeing with you. I'm just curious.

With an average QB in Seattle...

Agreed. Whatever the history of "retreads," I would prefer someone with the skins on the wall to push back on Jerry. He needs to go back to walking on his eggshells.
