Well, I think that is exactly what they are bringing him in for... become a 2-3 year starter while we draft a MLB next year to become the permanent replacement... at least that is what im hoping for. Hopefully the contract will justify this, and we wont sign some ridiculous 5 year deal.

Also, I don't understand all the hate towards fletcher. He has played at a premier level for 7 straight years now. While during that time, he hasn't missed a game. People say he is too old and washed up, yet, he broke several career highs last season, and actually had one of the better years in his career.

Considering our MLB woes last year, I love the signing...as long as it is just a short term fit

.......and what makes you think you will have draft pick next year?:lmao2:

also, you skins fans NEVER think you sign a BAD player... that is until after the season and you realize the other folks were right!

I'm sure if the skins do sign Fletcher there will be comparisons to our LBers, videos of Fletcher, and multiple threads defending the guy!

He's as productive as they come at that position and is just what the Skins need. I hope they sign him.

3 years $12M
$5M bonus

Do those two parts correlate anywhere except for Skins dream land?

I know, and with our track record, it is kind of hard to justify anything we are going to do anymore.

However, I really do think Fletcher is justified. First off, he has played at a premier level for 7 straight seasons now, all the while not missing a game. Second, two of his former D coords our on our staff (Williams and Jerry Gray), so he should have no trouble learning the system quickly.

I know you hear this every year, but for once, I think it might actually be a smart move in stead of a one year wonder like Carter (who I think will pan out in the end) or a brandon lloyd type.

As long as the deal is semi-decent, I love the move

and by the way, next year is looking VERY opitimistic for our draft picks. We havent waisted any yet, and we arn't targeting any RFA ( from what I know ). Oh my, i cant tell you how excited I will be to have all our picks :laugh2:

can you really dispute his stats from the last 7 years?

His point is the following.

If he is as good as you say he is, and you seem to be saying that and now providing stats to prove your point.

Why would you think he would sign for that contract you proposed and why do you think the skins would offer a lower contract like that seeing as they are known for higher contracts?

THAT is the point.

Plus the idea that besides Moss and Portis, not too many high paid players that the skins have signed have did a great deal for your team. ARE, Adam A and BL seem to be proof of that from last year alone.

He's a vet that might not be looking for the big money like some of the younger people in this league.

But who knows, this is obviously just speculation, and untill march 2nd rolls around, no one will be able to tell what this contract will look like.

Following previous trends, you would think we would sign him to a monster deal. But as for me, I'm going to remain optimistic that maybe our FO will do something smart for once :D

You are right, until it is signed nobody knows.

However you have three things working against your theory/hopes.

1. He is older and looking for that one last contract that will set him up after playing.

2. The skins are known for over paying players, including older players.

3. The FA market is weak and the cap money has went up. We will see prices of FAs go up across the board.

Ill say just this. Ill be all for this signing if:

A) Dont overpay for him
B) The coaches think we can get better DT play

Fletcher has been productive and stayed healthy for more if not all of his career. Only issue is his age really.

the only problem we see is that Fletcher has alot of miles on him, and the only direction he has left to go, is down, due to age and wear and tear

Ding. Ding.

Fletcher was really productive last year and played well for Buffalo. Is he getting up there in age? Yes. But you don't get 23 year old studs at every position.

If the Commanders do this smartly (sign to a 3 year contract or so) and develop his eventual replacement, this could benefit them.

Yeah, I know....history says otherwise that they'll overpay (and I expect they'll have to in order to get him anyway)....

As for solving your DT problems, drafting Branch would help. I'll obviously be hoping for the Commanders to blunder the pick.....

I beleive this is the best descroption of the situation. I think every in Commander nation (well, the fans at least) only see this as a short term fix. I would that we would go out and spend our 1st or 2nd round next year on a MLB to develop.

But once again, we wont know how this is going to work out until he actually gets signed.

Like I said I would go crazy over this signing if it happened. I'm not expecting Fletcher to be the answer to our problems on D. Just hoping for the best.

edit. Meant to say...would not go crazy.

You know even if the Skins would do a 180 degree turn compared to what they usually do.

I think people are going to find that every FA this offseason will be considered as being OVER paid.

Just the nature of the cap and a weaker FA group.

Oddly enough it seems as if the Skins are actually partially responsible for these hire prices every year...because of the crazy contracts they give out to so so players like Adam A, ARE and Lloyd and doing it so early that it starts setting the market.

Does Fletcher even count as a big name free agent signing?? Hes been productive been never been regarded as one of the best MLBs and has never made the pro bowl has he? This will be comical if we pay him as one though. Whatever we'll find out in a few days.
