You would think that even with the HUGE signing bonus' they give out that it would eventually come back to bite them when they then release them. I just don't understand it, but we have been saying this now for at least this decade.

it's insane.... they do this every year...I keep waiting to see when that old saying about 'salary cap hell catching up to them' will really take place... and to think they almost signed Leonard Davis close to or maybe more than what we signed him for...
somebody help me out here please...!!!

does it matter?

who cares how much cap room they have?

and even if they (or another team) technically have no cap room, you can always restructure deals or release a player here and there to make room

They back load their contracts and restructure before the big pay day hits, plus the rising salary cap always bails them out. It's a gamble, but the payoff is squeezing value out of dollars that you don't have.

Its the way they structure the deal. The #'s look big but they leave ways to restructure and free up cap room. They continue to restucture and push cap hits off into the future kind of like buying stuff you can't afford on a credit card. Eventually the bill comes due. But with the cap increasing its like your salary going up and all of a sudden you can afford to pay the credit card bill. The only thing that will kill them is retirements and injuries to players that still have big cap charges unaccounted for. They also are playing a dangerous game when it comes to depth. That cap space could probably be best used for quality backups across the board but thats not sexy enough to allow Snyder to sell the most expensive tickets in the NFL for a mediocre product so he will use the space to make a splash and leave the team vulnerable once again.

I think it's a loophole in the "Continuing to suck despite spending scads in free agency" clause.

But I'm no accountant.

5-11

They can always sign tons of guys, but it's a revolving door over there. Look how many guys they annually have to cut to get under the cap. They never have any continuity. And this year, there's been quite a few players they've wanted but weren't able to get, like Clements and the OL. They didn't get the top OL or Davis or even Pettigout.

Sure, they can keep finding ways to sign FA's, but if the end result is 5-11, then that can't be considered anything other than a type of cap hell.

They also goto their players ask them to restructure their contracts and turn salaries into roster bonus. They went to Portis, Moss Burnell and re did Jansen AGAIN!..it frees up money at the moment but it does hurt them in the form of depth. I think they even re did Phillips Daniels contract, all those contracts were re did this year alone.

This post has nothing to do with this thread, other than it has to do with the Commanders.....

I read something interesting about the Commanders yesterday.

They did not make a single 1st round draft pick during the 1970's. And they made only two 2nd round picks during the 1970's.

I recall their reputation for trading draft choices for veteran players during that era, of course, but had forgotten this particular factoid.

... you may return to your normal programming now ....

I expect that this is addressed at the next owner's meeting.

What's the point of having a salary cap if sorry *** Danny "I wish I had Jerry Jones' money and executive skills" Snyder will just break spirit--if not the letter--of the salary cap?

There are loop-holes in the cap. The Commanders are now starting to be copied by a lot of teams. Teams used to follow the 49ers cap manipulation methods but that was truly mortgaging your future.

One thing you notice is "guaranteed money" being a part of all these contracts you are seeing given especially this year. Teams used to never give out anything guaranteed except the signing bonus. Now teams can make any part of the contract guaranteed and that helps your cap figure from year to year.(don't no exactly how.....will have to ask adam on that one). An owner like Snyder who gives out guaranteed contracts doesn't mind losing money every now and then.

Also everyone assumes that all of their contracts are backloaded and the player never sees the money. Many of there contracts are actually frontloaded or spread evenly.

They must have a whole staff of capologists that work on this day and night and think of every conceivable option to free money and not pay the devil down the road. Most teams have 1 person trying to do this.

The NFL really needs to get rid of the rule about converting Salries to Roster Bonuses. They need to firm up the cap rules a bit.

Actually, to answer the question of how they do it:

They build a roster that is razor thin on depth.

Corollary: they have all their money invested in a handful of players.

They push money in the future counting on a rising cap.

They sacrifice flexibility. They would love to get out from under the contracts of Archuleta, Lloyd, Wynn, and Springs. But they can't afford to do so because of the cap hit.

It's pretty obvious that this is NOT a smart way to run the team. Want proof? No one else is doing it. There are 31 other teams that are run by brilliant people (for the most part). All of those teams know what the Skins are doing. They could all replicate if they want. But none of them do. Why? Because it is stupid and unproductive.

Their method is simple Big signing bonus small salary the first 3 years and then large salary, if they player gets to the big salary year they either cut them, restructure or convert the salary to a signing bonus to get spread over the length of the contract. If the cap ever stops making large jumps the skins are screwed.
