What happened to the days of running backs carrying 25-30 times a game and catching a few passes as well while still being effective?

That was back when DTs were about the size of current LBs and there were fewer games

Zeke taps his helmet so often I’m worried about him developing carpal tunnel
True, but doesn't need to be any more. If they are both getting 25-30 touches combined that's a good mix. Now, contracts are a whole other issue.

Do you know why some people run the 100 meters and look like they might die at the end of it and others run marathons and look like they can run another one when they finish?

Because human beings are different.. We have different lung capacities.. different rates of oxygen depletion.. different rates of muscle fatigue onset..

Pollard and Zeke are just different.. Zeke is built for more of a workload than Pollard is plain and simple. His body absorbs and recovers from the blows better.. Pick whatever reason for that which makes you comfortable but try not to ignore it. Zeke may not be as fast and quick as Pollard even when fresh.. but Zeke is probably closer to the same guy after 40 snaps as he was after 5 snaps.. Whereas Pollard might drop off a cliff after 30-35 snaps. People denying this reality do so simply to feed their own agenda.

This is a two back team.. each back brings something different to the party and together it has proven to be a winning formula. The Cowboys believe they can ride the duo to the promised land and they don't appear to believe that they can put the full load on either. Maybe they COULD do it with Zeke, since they have done it in the past and been very successful doing it but they've now decided that two backs, with different styles and skillsets is better. I believe they are correct. I don't understand why this continues to be so difficult to comprehend for so many people..

Honestly this maybe a good thing for us. He may not want to be a lead 20+ carry a game RB. Would Elliot or any other lead back come to the sideline after 14 touches and say he is done for the game. I like his honesty but not a team comment. Elliot takes either a pay cut or restructure and we pay Pollard ok money. I would pay Pollard 7 million and if Elliot takes a pay cut that would be nice. He may like his role here.
Perfect solution...

and ladies and gentleman, that's why Pollard is not a lead back, but just a complementary back. if he is gassed at 30 plays. what can I say.
I'd much rather a RB admits he's tired than take the obligatory next handoff for no gain. The OC should know when to NOT run consecutive plays to a RB but KM doesn't. It boggles my mind how often we waste a 1st and 10 on a tired RB that just got the 1st down in the first place. KM needs to go, it's obvious the running game is just "obligatory " to his scheme.

Great post.....if only our OC could figure out the best methods and plays to maximize each player.

Unless Peete was making it up sounds like it came from Pollard. Maybe Peete was exaggerating the conversation but who knows.
I think he is off the mark here. Pollard looked gassed after the long run. I think he could handle 20 touches a game. Now injury wise may another issue. Not sure he could sustain 20 touches per game for a season?

That would be nice but I gave up on Kellen Moore right after the "yards are yards" quote. I don't think he has any appreciation for the running game whatsoever. And since he doesn't see the value I don't think he puts a lot of thought into it and it shows in the way he calls running plays. There is simply no rhythm or feel to it. He can't tell when a guy is feelin it and needs to be fed the ball. Zeke or Pollard could break off an amazing 20 yard run and the next play we line up 5 wide empty.. It's absolutely maddening.

Maybe the reason the staff don't see Pollard as an every down type of back.

"[Pollard] played a total of 30 plays, and I think that's his max - as far as total play count - because then the juice doesn't become the same and he's not as quick, not as fast," running backs coach Skip Peete said after the Chicago game. "When he got that long run on third-and-1, soon as he got to the sideline he said, 'Coach, I'm done. Done for the game. I've got no more.'"

Great point.

If I can take an example from the animal kingdom, cheetahs can run nearly 80 miles per hour, but after a brief chase, they are depleted and have to rest for long times to recuperate.
Meanwhile, wolves can run more than 35 miles an hour but can pursue prey for miles.

Faster = cheetah
Endurance = wolf

You apparently have never been up close to Ted Washington, Gilbert Brown, Jerome Brown, The Fridge among others..

Yeah, a handful of big guys means that the players were just as big.

Clarification is required here. Is it 30 touches or 30 plays? I would argue most backs are whipped after 20 touches and 30 total plays.
That’s is true
He’s played 47% of the snaps this year
Not sure what pct he played in bears game
Also blocking in the pass game is also tough on the body too
Personally is think 50-50 is the way to play him and Zeke
Keep them both fresh
I would like to see him get more targets in the pass game even if it meant less touches in run game
The ball in his hands in space is a big play waiting to happen

Oh believe me I could rattle you off a list of names of guys from the 90's who were well over 300 pounds a a mile long. But the point is that however much smaller players were 30 years ago. .the statement that "the average linebacker today is the same size as DTs back then" is patently false. Leon Lett and Russell Maryland were the Cowboys DTs in the 90s... Aint no linebacker playing today as big as either of them. The Niners of that era had Bryant Young and Dana Stubblefield. Both were huge. Certainly bigger than any current linebacker you wanna name. Now if you wanna talk about the 60's and 70's you would have a case. Because back then teams had weight restrictions on guys and fined them for getting too big. That kinda all stopped with the success of "The Hogs" (who ironically were never really all that big) and of course when the Fridge became a cult hero the cat was out of the bag.. He proved that big fat guys can play too.. and that was pretty much a wrap on weigh ins. From that point on.. somewhere in the mid to late 80's I think.. you either could play or you couldn't.. to hell with what the scale said.

Yeah but that's two different species.. A better example might be the one cheetah who can never catch any food because he flames out after one chase but his brother can run three or four chases and regularly catches at least one gazelle.. Then has to share it with his lazy brother.. LOL!

I don't think I have ever seen so many threads with Skip Peete in the title.

There are 4 on the front page alone.
