It's common knowledge in the historical community and has been generlly accepted by medical and scientific professionals since all the longterm sleep cycle studies were published about 10 years ago.

For thousands of years human sleep across the globe was divided into a first and second sleep each lasting about four hours because that is the natural sleep rythm we are primed for. The unnatural way we sleep now is the result of societal change, not biological ones. In addition, a study of 10,000 people across Europe about five years ago showwed that 82% of those who sleep longer than four hours at a time awoke at least once and had to fall back to sleep. Sleeping through the night is very rare for people who try and get the "recommended" eight hours all at once.

it is usually not a good idea to get your medical information from the popular media

their job is to sensationalize things not present facts objectively

sure some people will have a differing point of view but "the medical community in general" certainly does not believe we should wake up every four hours

there are many many studies that show that short sleep duration (approx <5 hours) increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, HTN, depression, etc certainly not a good thing

Studies that talk about increased mortality or adverse effects of "long sleep" are typicaly talking about >9 hours of sleep

if i remember correctly, you are a medical student, dont take my word for it, do a pubmed search on "short sleep" and look for yourself

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I've tried waking up earlier every day but I can't seem to fall asleep until around 4 AM regardless of when I woke up. I just can't get comfortable or something.

I'm going to give the diet and environment suggestions Jobberone mentioned a shot. I used to be able to drink caffeine (usually tea) shortly before bed and it wouldn't bother me, but perhaps in my ripe old age of 24, it might be affecting me differently.

If not I might try the all nighter thing without sleeping until the next night.

Again, much appreciated, everyone.

I can't imagine how useless such a schedule would be without electricity to allow you to be productive outside when it's dark.

I've always had horrible sleeping patterns. Up until a few months ago when I had a rigid, early morning schedule thrown into the mix.

For a while I worked the worst hours ever. Sometimes overnight, sometimes at 4AM and then go to class for a few hours, come how around 10AM and nap for a while.

When I moved on from that schedule, it was almost impossible to get into a good rhythm.

There would be times where I would stay up for hours and never fall asleep.

There were times where my schedule and sleep patterns would give me about 4 hours per night for 4-5 straight days, few naps in between and then the weekend would hit and I would crash for hours on end. I once slept for about 14 hours straight, got up and ate and sat around for an hour before going back to bed for another 10 hours.

A few months back I would have said there is nothing better than sleeping until noon on Saturday or Sunday. Then after a while I could make it past 10. Now I get up shortly after I regularly would during the week. A few times in the last month I've gotten up at like 6AM on the weekends. It's kind of cool because it makes your weekend days incredibly long and makes getting to sleep on Sunday night incredibly easy. I hope I can stick with an early riser schedule but I doubt it. If given the chance to, I'll sleep until I absolutely have to get up.
