So, do we keep Flo in 2008 ?

I dunno. Flozell is a pro bowl tackle and you don't go to the pro bowl for being crappy. Sure, he has some issues with concentration such as way too many false starts but he has all the physical tools that make a great offensive lineman and his play more than makes up for it.

However, we might have to let a player walk this offseason. I think were like $12m under the cap but we have Romo, TNew and JuJo coming up for FA, not to mention our likely top 10 draft pick we'll have to pay next year. Romo and Newman are going to want to get paid handsomely. If it comes down to it and someone has to walk I hope we let JuJo go cause Flozell has much more of an impact than he does.

I'm getting more nervous about our contract situation. I really hope Jerry re-signs him quickly and takes care of Newman as well.

i think some are drastically under estimating what a lt is worth. flo is a good lt, maybe top 5 or 6 in the league. he will get in the ballpark of the 3-4 yr 20-25 million offer if not more.
do we keep him? well that depends on free i think. does the staff think he is ready to start in this league. then the next year we could loose colombo although we could also extend him .
i don't think we can just assume mcq is ready to start in this league. i like him but i would need to see alot more before then.
i don't know the franchise number for a lt but i could see us franchising him if free is'nt ready but we have to make a decision on mcq before this draft. if they don't think he can be a starter then we need to get a ot early

Ball park would probably be 3-4 year, 20-25 million extension.

So, you think he's going to sign for 6.6 a year?

This guy doesn't have 6 or 8 years left in the league IMO. He's going to try to score one last payday. I think he'll be playing for 8 to 10 a year.

Fellows, why do you all think he'll get such big contract offers? He'll turn 33 in Aug 08. Many teams after our Riveria signing (followed by his back injuries) stopped offering big contracts to players over 30. I think Free (along with McQuistan) are seen as Adams successors in 08. A lot will depend on Free's continued development in practices to which we don't have access. Must admit I'd also like to keep Adams around for another year to give Free another year's development. Best advise at this moment: let's hold off making this decision until we see how he plays the rest of this year.

It doesn't really matter what Flozell wants. It matters what the market will give him.

Orlando Pace is scheduled to make a base salary of about $7.2 million per year for the next 3 years. I seriously doubt anyone would value him at a higher level than that. Somewhere between 5-7 million seems about right to me.

We have to keep Flo, if we don't than I will look very awkward wearing my Flo jersey to sports bars.

Why do we keep having this discussion? He is an old lineman who is overrated. Flo is going to want dough and he doesn't deserve it.

If we get a decent contract, we keep Flo. He's going to get a few silly penalties but can shut down that side which is critical in protection.

Flo is going to want to make as much money as he can as this is going to be his last big payday. I don't think Jerrah will accomodate that.

He's a near Pro Bowl, LT

That has value, I keep this line together personally. A lot to be said for continuity. Candidly, I might consider moving him inside to Guard.

Lots of ways the Boys can go here. They can franchise him next year to see what McQ and Free look like if they do not know by now. Probably do about McQ but not yet with Free. Personally, I would franchie flo for one year and then have McQ and Free fight it out at the next camp for the LT position.that would give McQ three years and Free two years to get ready.

Agreed, Nors. How goes it?

I would like to see Flo retained. He struggles with speed rushers, but I think would be a great guard too. I've mentioned that in a few posts. If BIGG can go to guard at his size so can Flo. Flo played guard (and even a bit of TE if anyone remembers) his first season with Dallas. At guard he'd have less false start penalties I'm guessing as well.

For those that want to let him go, I can name three teams that would line up to sign him immediately:

Philadelphia Eagles
New York Giants
Washington Commanders

I'd hate to see Flo beating on us twice a year.

Unfortunately, we have quite a few players coming up at same time and all seem to be playing pretty well. Jerry might not want to shell out 7 hefty signing bonuses all in same year.

Flo might be getting older, but if we can iron out the right contract I'd like to see him retire a Cowboy, or at least play 2-3 more years. Imagine the depth and versatility resigning him would give us for the future. We only just got the oline back to being "good" this year, don't wanna disrupt that again. Flo has been in Dallas a long time, he might not wanna move and might accept a bit less to stay in Big D.

Good points. But I don't agree with him moving to guard. He's much more valuable at tackle, and I think he knows that's where the money is at. Though I do agree that he would make a fine tackle, if he ever went that route.

Make no mistake, I'm with you here. As Nors stated, I think that solidity and continuity is important. This line is AWESOME. And I think it's a big part of why Romo is as successful as he is. He's got a lot of good players on his side.

How does the Transition Tag work?

We would get to match another team, correct? And if we lose him we get a draft pick?

If we wanted to theoretically keep Flo for 1-2 years, couldn't we transition tag him for 1 year and at worst franchise him for the 2nd year?

what decline? he made the probowl again last yr and was a big reason for the running game success there

OL's have a longer life span than most other players..if he's healthy there's no real reason not to resign him, unless he is just vastly too expensive or unless they know Free or McQ is ready for LT fulltime

Flo's in the last year of his contract. What do we do in 2008? He's playing exceptionally well ... and I'd hate to lose him.

But his salary of $5 mil a year is going to make a serious dent. Do we bring him back for 5 more years for $5 mil a year?

If not, will Free be ready? I just have nightmare visions of Winston Justice out there. If we make a deep playoff run, do we chance 2008 on a 2nd year LT?

The economics may prove to be severe, as I'd love to have Flo for another year while Free develops.

Anyway, it's just mid week talk. Nothing vital. I'm enjoying the ride right now.

But nothing wrong with casting an eye into the future.

Eddie

If your putting you faith in Free as the future... You need to have your mental health evaluated..

You want to put your Franchise player ( Romo) at risk with an unproven Utlitly player. No thanks.

Keep Flo for 2-3 more years and if Cleveland you can get a top 5 pick from Cleveland , you pick jake Long if McFadden is gone. If not, then get pick Sam baker from SC.

I hate that people put some much faith in mid to late round draft picks. Probably 75 % of them wont be on a team in 3 years. People grow too attached to players just because your team selected them.

But with that said.. McQ might have a chance to play Tackle in this league, but I'm not sure if he is agile enough to protect Tnoy's blindside. Only an Injury to Flo will tell and I hope that NEVER happens.

Colombo is signed for 2 years...we cannot keep riding that train...just like we have not shown the fear to give Reeves and Crayton a chance...it is time to do the same thing at LT...10 years is enough...his performance is maddening...and he has the worst timing of any player I can ever remember
This is "crack-talk". What would be maddening is seeing Romo running for his life or getting pounded into the ground. I AIN'T willing to take that chance. And for the record, INJURIES forced us to give Reeves and Crayton their chance. Letting Flo walk would be a totally different and stupid thing to do.....
