Again, soccer is for kids not athletic enough for basketball, not tough enough for football, and not coordinated enough for baseball.

This is just sheer stupidity.

Soccer players are nacys who flop after any little bit of contact. Come to thik of it, Manu Ginobili's tendencies are starting to make sense, it must be a foreign thing.

It is true that soccer players are fantastic actors.

Have to laugh at the idiot that claimed soccer is just as complicated as football. NOT EVEN CLOSE.?

I'll give a simple example of soccer complexity. Try to kick a soccer ball the way David Beckham did on that free kick against Ecuador a couple days ago.

In terms of a game comparison, soccer compares more to baseball or basketball than football. In soccer, you have about 11 guys who need to be about as good as a baseball pitcher in terms of what they can do with the ball. They have roles, but depending on circumstances, those roles can change. In (American) football, a guard isn't suddenly going to become a wide receiver.

David.

The only athletic events currently being held are MLB, the World Cup, the College World Series, and the WNBA (okay, so maybe that one doesnt count as an athletic event).

This time of year really, really sucks...... :(

You need to get a hobby. :laugh1:

I will give soccer one thing, that Ronaldinho guy is probably the best player at their respective sport in the entire world. It's not even close, he literally turns soccer into an art the way he plays.

The problem is, it takes someone that good for most people to be impressed by what is basically glorified kickball.

I asked how many plays did soccer teams have. Noticed no one knew. Since the average pro team has 70 or more....
Football is a lot more complicated then soccer- whether some want to admit it or not.

My youngest son was a star in soccer growing up in our area.

He was 6'1", 170lbs, extremely fast and very athletic.

He could have been a star in HS and probably get some sort of scholarship help at a small college.

Instead of that he decided to be a 2nd string WR and special teams player on his HS football team. (our high school runs the ball 95% of the time)

They won the State Championship his Sr. year.

Just another example of why soccer will never rate with football in America.

He chose to be a 2nd teamer in football over a star in soccer.

On another note : - - - -
Why do soccer players go so wild when a goal in scored? They run around wildly with a crazed look on their face tearing off their shirts when a point is scored.

I think soccer should make the goal smaller and take the goalie out myself.

Obviously

Soccer consists of kicking a ball around until you either get lucky or the defense blows it and you get a shot on goal

That PK awarded to Italy was a TOTAL flop job. He hopped with one leg over the defender then acted like he couldn't get the other foot over and got barely clipped, falls, sells it, and gets the PK IN STOPPAGE TIME!

I know I've been complaining about NBA refs and their inconsistency, but in the short time I've watched this World Cup, the FIFA refs take the cake.

Dude. That is just ignorant. Most soccer plays involve split second decision making based on the defensive alignment or even whether a defender is leaning one way or another. They aren't just out there screwing around.

Football is more complicated in terms of set plays because teams stop after every play. Soccer is more complicated in terms of making real time adjustments. Soccer focuses more on players being in tune with each other and running plays on the fly. Next time you watch a soccer game observe how often the players know exactly where to go without even looking at who is passing the ball. Those are plays and they are complicated -- these guys don't have coaches calling out the play -- they all have to read the defense and know where to go.

If we saw a QB audible into a play to take advantage of the defensive alignment we'd say "great play" -- soccer players do that all freaking day.

Substituitions. different formations. play clock. Just a few of the reasons football is much more complicated.

They do it, and get to kick the ball for a little while longer until its their turn to turn it over, then they get to wait patiently until they get the ball back for the chance to turn it over again

Soccer in the US is growing, and for a reason....

I retrack my statement earlier, that I find soccer to be a bit boring to watch. I've been watching the World Cup the past couple of days when I felt like watching TV...and the only thing that would make me switch off of the World Cup would be if House was on...

The World Cup has begun to draw my interest back into soccer (well, at least watching it).

And its growing.... everywhere I go, I hear people talking about the World Cup...now granted, it is the offseason in football, but I have yet to overhear a conversation about football when I am out and about and running errands. But there seems to be a lot of excitement over soccer in the past year or so, moreso than I can ever remember in my area....

Yet the TV ratings for WC here in the US has not been very high compared to other sports. I agree the sport is getting more popular here but I don't think you will see the same passion for the sport here in the US as you do in other parts of the world.

So many claim soccer is growing. I question that. MLS is a joke. The Womens league died. Kids play it then stop caring when they grow up. I have been hearing this that soccer is growing for 20 years. I see nothing that supports it. And I can tell you that NO ONE where I work or where I have been over the last two weeks (and was around NYC for a while as well) is talking about the world cup.

I doubt so too. Soccer overseas is more revered than anything we have here in the US. People take off of work to travel to other countries all dressed up to support their team, no matter how bad/good they are.

They truly are fanatics.

I think soccer will grow, maybe not to the extent of football....but I don't think its going away.

I agree, I think to a certain extent it will grow but for many of us who enjoy sports we tend to find the game boring. I'll watch some if the US is involved but other than that Myself and many people I know will not sit down and watch a soccer match.
