So what potential impact could this have on the roster?

I would just say that this makes it a near lock for Coleman to make the team. Pile's chances of making the team also went up.

I think/thought Beriault and Watkins were a lock to make the team either way.

My best wishes to Keith and his family.

People were saying the same thing about Big Ben in the hours after his accident. I saw him on ESPN yesterday, and it didn't even look like he'd been hurt. I hope KD gets as lucky and comes out of this clean.

Fair enough. Again, I would first like to know more about the extent of these injuries and the longterm effects, if any.

Now my sentiments about his career being in serious jeopardy extend beyond concerns regarding his health. This would be the second time in the past three years Keith has been involved in a shooting incident.

Didn't we just sign this trouble-magnet prick to a contract extension?

There has been a lot of condemnation of KD on another Cowboys board for these shootings. This does, on the surface, look like someone may have been hunting him. Reports say the car pulled up beside him and opened up. Either a case of mistaken identity or god forbid he was mixed up in something? What are the odds of being shot twice in 3 years? I hope the investigation finds this was a random act, but the questions will be out there on the kind of life the kid is living, whether it's warrented or not.

I think that's a fair take. I would also err on the side of caution, waiting for details before assessing anything further. It's very possible Keith is in the clean on this, except wrong place/wrong time. We shall see...

Bill Parcells is what I wonder about. That's all I'm saying.

I agree, Bill seems to be less than sympathetic in these situations.

Let's hope Davis will be o.k., but I think if Davis can't go, the FS position will be up for grabs between Coleman, Watkins, Pile, and Berault.

I'd guess it would come down to between Coleman and Watkins.

Agree. Depends on the circumstances as to why he was on 635 at 5 AM. If going to work out. Taking his friend somewhere, and who was his friend, and his / her character. Or where have they been. BP's reaction will be based on that. We probably won't get the details for a while.

Roster wise, I don't think it will be a big impact except depth and special teams will be hurt, but not an impact for starting. I believe Coleman will start, KD get some playing time, and Watkins eventually taking over.

I hope there is a good reason they were out at that time. And was a random incident. Would be a shame if someone is targeting him for what ever reason. you never know, but I don't think it was from anything illegal. You never hear anything about KD being a bad person.

Not to sound cold, but he wasnt going to start, or even be 2nd string by midseason in all likelyhood
I disagree.

He was almost definitely going to start given his experience and I personally think he is the best FS on the roster.

at this point, I have to agree. There's a reason we paid him some decent money and had to be more than just for ST. ST players aren't all that hard to find. KD was probably going to start at FS in at least the first game of the season.
I expect Watkins to be starting by the end of the season but I think BP has a level of comfort in KD, not complete comfort, but he knows what he's going to get from KD and KD is still improving.
Personally, I think KD would make a stud SS, it just so happens that we already have one.

I would think this improves Willie Piles chance of making the team, because of his special teams ability.

There isn't any question he would have started in Jacksonville.

still way too early to tell...remember the first time he was shot the doctors cleared him but BP cut himi to make a point...Not only that but he still has a couple of months of time left...And no one knows where he was shot the police denied those particular details...it was a report saying he was shot in the head and in the thigh...a report, not fact...no one knows anything yet...and if he was shot in the back of the head I doubt his condition would be listed as stable so soon...supposedly not life threatening. I mean he was able to answer questions and was able to pull over get out of the car and get in the passengers seat to let his friend drive him to the hospital...so he will probably be fine...the police think it was a car-jacking attempt(possibly)....so lets not jump to conclusions about him being a huge trouble maker...wrong place wrong time seems more like it...

I hope KD recovers and he can make the roster again but as far as him being a starter, I dont view him as a necessity. He only had 3 passes defended and zero interceptions as a full time starter. That can't be too hard to replace.

We need a guy like Keith on the roster.

He always seemed to be the guy making the tackle on special teams.

I hope this doesn't end his career - he had a mean streak in him that always seemed to fire up the team.

how can folks seriously say a serious Davis injury has no impact on the roster?

yeah, we matched his RFA contract just because the staff liked him. Don't be stupid. You don't pay a guy well if you think he don't make a difference.

Lets get one damn thing straight here KD got shot he was'nt the shooter...he is the victim!!

He's an above average special team player and a below average safety. Honestly I don't think that's hard to replace.

If Davis is so easily replaceable, why did the Cowboys match the offer sheet of the Saints? He's the team best special team player, hell is among the best in the NFL. So, if he can't come back is going to affect the team more then people think.

He led the team in ST tackles, yes. He's a ST stud, and he was going to be pretty decent safety in the league, too, IMHO.

Listening to the Summerall report in Theebs downloads thread, it appears Summerall thinks Davis is going to be cut. Personally, I'd really hate to see that happen over a carjacking, just because it was early in the morning, during the offseason.

My guess is BP tells him he needs to be on the field to make the team, sweats him during camp, and takes a good hard look at all of the other candidates before letting him off the hook. I don't think this will ultimately impact the roster at all, unless Davis can't heal well enough to play well in camp and earn his spot.
