So what's the deal with Jason Witten?

I think any of these guys would take stats and history and toss them out the window for a Super Bowl ring.

We're winning because we are spreading the ball around; Witten will gladly take four catches a game if we're dancing in February.

I agree Witten has been to a Pro Bowl it is the other bowl he is trying to get to and is playing very good ball for us.

So what's the deal with Witten? Not to "dog" him, but this season doesn't seem to be one of his better ones. He seems to be struggling as a receiver. As a blocker he's the same old Witten - consistent and good. But it seems that as a receiver he has not been as good. Some unusual dropped balls, and many times covered more than in past years.

Now I have not actually compared his numbers (for all I know they're on par), but I'm not talking about stats; I'm talking about what I "feel" watching him play this season. In past seasons I felt "domination" or that he was "unstoppable". This season feels like a "struggle".

So what can be behind this? Is it that we're running the backs more, so he's used less as a receiver? Is this also because Bennett is taking balls away from him? Is it because Roy Williams has rendered himself so useless as a receive that teams can roll an extra safety Witten's way? Or is it that he's just having a sub-standard season, based on his standard, like not running routes as crisp or lacking some concentration?

Anyway, it's food for thought.

i swear to GOD people invent crap to be worried about.

There's only one football.

Each week, it's someone different.

Where's Bennett?

Put Choice in!

Don't forget about Felix!

What's up with Roy?

In the meantime, the Cowboys offense is racking up yards and points.

In regards to Witten, specifically, for awhile now, I believe he's the No. 1 guy opponents believe they need to stop .... followed by the running game.

THIS.

perfect example of how life works. we get a player who's hot - run with it. only now fans come back and are all WAH that another player isn't "up to par".

it simply isn't going to happen in the real world. now if you wanna madden it up and make every player score 2-3 TD's a week, even FLO! then have at it.

but leave madden in the xbox, please.

If only we could get rid of Roy, Witten and Romo, we might be onto something offensively.

Witten is tied for the NFC lead among tight ends with 37 catches. He's on pace for 85 catches, which would be the third-highest total of his career and is something only eight other tight ends have ever done. More importantly, he has caught a career-high 77.1 percent of the passes thrown to him. And he has not been charged with any "drops."

The only things lacking this season have been passes thrown to him inside the red zone (he's almost always either blocking or hasn't been thrown to) and a couple of long-gainers (he has three; normally he'd have five out of 37 catches). Everything else has been his usual high level of production -- or better.

Then someone made a mistake.

He dropped at least two passes on Sunday, and I know there's been more.

I still love J-Wit, but he's dropped some catchable passes this year.

If a pass is poorly thrown (too high, behind, etc.), or if the receiver or ball is hit by another player, it's not classified as a "drop." None of Witten's 11 non-catches have been classified as a "drop."

By the way, guess who leads the NFL in drops?

I've been trying to find stats for drops, but since it's not an official stat and people argue about a drop vs mishandling/missing a bad pass.

He's had a few bad passes thrown to him, but even then, he's always been able to haul those in; it's what made Witten Witten.

My theory, is that with TO gone, there are certain voids that must be filled. With Roy taking up the "blocking down field" roll, Austin filling in the "big play" roll, Witten has taken it upon himself to be the "drops" guy.

har har har :p I kid, but his drops have been a concern...albeit slight, b/c he's still Jason Witten.

If you have been watching Witten you would notice he is having one of the most dominate blocking seasons I have seen. Everytime we have some one break a big play he is there. People are getting to spoiled with pass catching tight ends that they forget what they are best at. Just because you not seeing him making huge catches and scoring touchdowns does not mean a thing. He is playing fantastic.

Hos is that you? :laugh2:

He has been so good catching almost everything thrown at him that people expect him to make every catch. Witten has created some pretty lofty standards for his self.

No, but I do acknowledge Witten is a top notch blocker. So did Troy Aikman in the Atlanta game.

Pity so many don't understand the value of that skill. Vince Lombardi said this...

"Some people try to find things in this game that don't exist but football is only two things - blocking and tackling."

It's all for fun and games. :D Most of us know Witten is the most complete TE in the NFL because of his superior blocking.

I know it is. I am doing my level best to simply ignore the thread by thread by thread taunts about blocking. Argue with Lombardi and other experts.

I think he's fine. There have been some times he hasn't looked as explosive, but that might have been from the coverage.

What I miss is us sending on some intermediate to deep routes every so often down the middle. Witten has the capability to open the field up by exploiting the middle. Seems like we've been using him more on outs and hitches instead.

I just checked the stats. I think I'm right.

Witten has consistently had an 11 yard average per catch throughout his career. This year he's at 9.4.
