So, what's the opinion on Gurode? Do you

think we keep him as a reserve and let him compete for a starting spot next year?

From what I could tell, he played pretty well versus Carolina. I don't know how he played versus the Rams. Also, he gives us some versatility in that he can play Center. All in all, I think he would make a good reserve.

I wouldn't mind keeping him for a reasonable amount (i.e., cheaply).

Opinions?

If I am a GM...

I would see Gurode as a backup player and/or someone who is expendable. I would also not have him playing center either....

He just doesnt have it....

I think we should keep him as backup to Rivera. he looked ok at the end of the season.

Gurode = solid backup at Centre and Guard. He has power and size, he needs to get quicker in the mental aspect and consistency parts.

I see again and again that it can take 5-6 years for linemen to really come into their own. I think it's one of the toughest positions in football especially with all the complex blitzes and defenses these days. Gurode still has some upside. These next 3-5 years are when he is suppossed to come into his prime. We can't afford to keep letting these players just disappear into neverland. We have a huge void in our lineup. Super young, or very old, we lack the emerging studs that win you super bowls in their 3rd thru 6th seasons. Keep working on this guy I say.

What bugs me a ton is that he played his best football in his first season. This is also true about Solomon Page, and maybe even Flozell Adams.

I'm not sure if it is coaching or the talent around these players etc, but we just aren't getting solid play from oline since the glory days. We also need improvement blocking at FB and tightend. Campbell has taken a step back (injury?). Witten is awesome pass catching talent, but can get beat bad on blocks sometimes. Polite is very inconsistent and totally blows some blitzes. At least Barber looks really good as blitz pick up RB. Jones still gets hammered but tries at least..

Why would we want to keep a guy who has struggled for 3 seasons. Although he was ok in his rookie year, he basically still made the same mistakes the last 2 seasons. I would want to rebuild this whole Oline and wipe the slate clean minus Flo.

#1-Hire a new Oline coach, redo LA and Rivera's deals.
#2-Let Gurode, Peterman, Columbo, Rogers, Proctor, and Price go.
#3-Give Al Johnson a shot at C, Give Pettiti a shot at RT.
#4-Sign 2 midlevel FA Olineman, 1 OT and 1 OG.
#5-Draft Oline early and often, at least 2 on the 1st day and 2 on the second
#6-Bring in competition at the supposed backup spots with FA rooks, and keep the most talented, regardless of salary.

Kinda extreme but we need good results next year if we are going to push for a SB.

You have to keep him. What interior lineman based on performance this past season is noticeably better(if at all) than Gurode? Maybe LA, but that's it. Unless Parcells/Jones plan on adding at least 2 better players at C/G, Gurode must be retained.

Gurode sucks. Keep him on the bench or get rid of him. If he starts again i will explode.

I think we need him. He is the only depth we have at center and RG. I think he would be a great insurance policy for Marco Rivera who knows how he will recover from his injury. He looked good filling in for Rivera, i think his future is at RG. He is not going to make much anyways.

I agree with Josh.
I may keep Gurode...but we need to add 4-5 new olineman through FA and the draft.
I would sign the top olineman available no matter what position - Guard, Center or Tackle. I would sign at least another one in FA with starting experience. One of the FA signings needs to be able to play RT.

I would draft at least 2 olinemen in the top 5 rounds.

It was Gurode, not Rivera who blocked when JJ went off in 2004.
Again in 2005.

coincidence?

No JJ went off running left in 2004. Thats documented and old news. In Carolina game JJ went off running left.

Guy can't start on this line consistently? - toss him. He sucks.

Gurode is going to go to a team offering a better shot at starting. Why would he want to stay and be a backup?

Teams are always going to be interested in a cheap, young lineman. Some guys just need a change of scenery.

We need to resign this guy. Marco Rivera is not even an adequate guard anymore. We need a contigency plan in case Rivera is never the same.

IMO, he will want to go to a team where he could play, like the Texans, NO or Arizona.

Give him the job.. He is a better guard than Rivera at this point. Besides Allen might be a cap casuality this season.
