Why are so many acting " pretending" like Tyron Smith is the second coming of Anthony Munoz? When in truth he hasnt done very much at all.

Its as if everyone decided just to SAY Smith is the next big thing and moved forward with the idea whether reality backs it up or not.

Doug Free started a grand total of 23 games at RIGHT tackle,.....he gave up 6 sacks in that time. Smith? He started 16 games " seven games less than FREE" on the right side and gave up 9 and a half sacks.

And now we are moving Tyron to the left side.

I guess I just dont get this idea where so many just pencil in Tyron and say....." Well,...were all set there!" WHY? Why would you say that? Is it just because we WANT it to be so badly that we insist that it is regardless of what the facts say?

You have to understand,....there are a TON of very pedestrian right tackles in this league, some of them quite young also, who have performed at least as good as Tyron did last season and some much better.

Having said all that........I do believe that Smith has what it takes to be a special left tackle in the NFL. He can really be a force for us for years to come. But in no way is he even close to being there yet. Hopefully he will soon, as early as this year is my hope,...but thats exactly what it is at this point.....A HOPE.

Time to put away the anointing oil and let the kid earn it. As I said,....I have alot of faith that he can,...he just hasnt done it yet.

????????????

I don't get it. Smith had an exceptionally good year for a rookie. And for a kid who was starting in the NFL at the tender age of 20. What's not to be optimistic about?

What an unnecessary and flat out ignorant comment. Tyron Smith in his rookie season was already one of the best young offensive linemen in the game. Should've made the pro bowl. Kid is a stud. His athleticism is incredible. What an incredible pick that was by Jerry and co. Does he have room for improvement and growth? Sure, but who doesn't at his age. He's basically like the tackle version of Dez Bryant. Got some incredible potential. I really feel like Tyron can be one of the all time great football players. I really don't see switching sides being an issue for Tyron at all. I believe Tyron will take that next step and become the most dominant offensive lineman in the game this season.

I also think Doug Free will do better this season. Last season he was a dissapointment after a terrific season the year before. We added a couple of quality offensive linemen during the offseason in Livings and Bernadeau. Is our OL great? No, but it's definitely improved from last year. They don't need to be great though just decent.

We got one of the most mobile quarterbacks in the league in Tony Romo. When you have a guy like that you don't need to be great. Look at the last couple of champions. The Green Bay Packers and New York Giants. Mediocre at best offensive lines, but because of having a mobile guy like Rodgers and Manning they could get away with a mediocre offensive line and still win.

Here is what is a little unsettling to me.......At left tackle we roll out Smith, a still Raw Smith who hasnt played left tackle in ages as he was a right tackle in college.

Our guards look to be Livings and Bernadeau....WHO? Although I have a good feeling that Livings will perform fairly decent. At Center......Costa. OH OH.

And at right tackle......Doug Free. The guy who half the board thinks sucks!...LOL Even though in his games started at right tackle he performed at a much higher level than Smith did.

In all actuality Doug Free, Playing as a RIGHT tackle, is the most stable lineman in his position of the 5 starters. This is based upon FACT,...track record when the games count,...not just wishful thinking.

Think about that a minute...........

But to end on a positive,...once again as I posted earlier, I do believe Smith has the attributes needed to perform at a high level. I just believe he has to SHOW US on the field in games where it counts before we go crowning him a perennial pro bowler is all.

No it isnt. I made it very clear in my initial post that I felt Smith had what it takes to perform at a high level. In fact I even BELIEVE he will at some point. Im a big fan of Tyron to be honest. Im just more into reality I guess. But to PRETEND that he already has,....now that really IS ignorant.

Tyron Smith graded out as a the 4th best tackle per PFF for last season.

My friend, I think it is very difficult in a training camp environment to get much of any idea as to status up and down the offensive line. The effects of camp will linger through much of each season. But as to merit as a group or even an individual player who is defineably in his growth is just a tenuous view of camp highlights and gut feelings of staff and media.

Fans just don't get to see a whole body of works upon which to base an 'educated' guess even. And often, what he does see, is diluted by in team activity and less than game conditions to view merit upon.

In house, a talent can easily be mislabeled when not against an opponent actually attempting to do you harm.

There should be apprehension all the way up and down this year's offensive line...period.

But I'm a fan of the sport, and the Cowboys. I just don't take quickly to doubting and disturbing a whole cloud of dust in doubt into the air, because of weighing values. They are there just as much as potential for good. I just await the picture to evolve, but I root for the best in the interim. That is merely called sportsmanship...in a fan.

If I were to doubt on tackles, I would first question Doug Free. He had plenty of problems for last season. To flip him back on the right side, where he now will be required to dominate, and not just shield block, I have some apprehension as well. He has to readjust, as well as develop an extenstion of his original talents at the sport.

What in the world are you talking about man? Tyron has ALREADY played at a high level last season in his rookie year. He was one of the best offensive linemen in the game last year. What's scary is he can and will get alot better. He should've made the Pro Bowl IMO. Again I don't really see it being an issue for Tyron switching sides. He did it in college why couldn't he do it again in the NFL? Tyron as I said has enormous potential and will take the next step this year and become the most dominant offensive lineman in the game.

Does anybody read....AT ALL? How can anybody say that Im NOT optimistic about Smith when Ive said I was over and over again in just these few posts. WOW! Just saying he isnt nearly there YET. And he's not.

Very hopeful he will be though,...probably sooner than later.

yeah, one of the very few young bright spots this team has.

let's not talk glowingly about him, rather, let's focus on how crappy we are at every other position along the line

The point that he already gave up a 'high' level of sacks was offered as a point...try evolving issue from that point.

Forget it. I guess people just read what they want to read instead of what I actually posted ! LOL

Tell ya what though.........HOLY MOLY! Doug Free MUST really be a beast then! LOL He gave up a total of 6 sacks in TWENTY THREE starts at right tackle compared to the 9 and a half sacks givin up by Smith at right tackle in 7 less games started.

Sometimes, when one is trying to focus upon how and where a unit comes together, it is beneficial to pinpoint points of importance and how they interact. That is good analytical analysis if applied constructively.

;) Easy fella', you have a discussion potential here, some of the participants are taking it personal although. Some must still be frustrated from last season and a half.

Well he's not perfect. He was a rookie afterall.

Yeah, it's like this....we couldn't possibly have a better prospect for that position than we do in Tyron.

The comparison to Free is laughable. I'd like to see a 20 year old Doug Free start at RT his rookie year. It'd have been one of the most pathetic performances in the history of this franchise. There's a reason why Smith's now your LT.

In his last 7/8 games last year he gave up 2 sacks

He finished super strong

one of the reasons our tackles were blamed for a lot of sacks was that Tony had no pocket to step up into

The way it is SUPPOSED to be is that when there is heat coming from the outside the QB steps up into the pocket allowing the rushers to go behind him pushed by the tackles to keep the rusher from being able to change directions and get the QB

With pressure up the middle that ability disapears and the ones getting blamed are the tackles when it is really the interior of the line that is at fault

Oh...I know. No biggy. I guess Im just not the penciling in kinda guy. Do I believe he has the potential to be a pro bowl type player sooner rather than later? YES...I absolutely do.

Just saying he is going to have some growing pains is all,...and thats to be expected. We cant just pencil him in as ROCK SOLID on the left side,....not just yet anyway. In the future.....yeah probably. But not right away this year,...and THIS year is the one Im most concerned about because this is the year we are currently living in....LOL

Because about 6 paragraphs were you dumping on him followed by some fine print where you said you think he has what it takes, but still had conditions attached.
