Colombo was beaten twice around the edge. Again, on those plays, which other offensive linemen was on the ground after getting beat? I just saw Colombo on the ground watching his guy zero in on Tony Romo.
On one of them, Colombo's guy (a rookie) just ran right around him, right off the bat.
I don't get the excuses for his poor play.
I hope it improves, but I don't trust him at all in pass protection and with good reason.
Ray Edwards and some rookie from the Raiders making him look slow....
If Dallas is smart, they will be getting a backup plan ready, right now, at RT, imso... I sure hope they don't wait too late if this continues.

I went back and watched all of Colombo's plays and I think he did a good job in this game. For the most part, Romo was holding on to the ball entirely too long and you just don't have that kind of luxury.
1. On Romo's first sack, there's no question it's on Romo. It's not even worth discussing.
2. On the second sack, Colombo did slip letting the defender get to Romo, but Colombo was able to drive him out pretty wide before slipping. And by the time the defender got to Romo (i) all of the routes had been run and (ii) Romo had started to throw but brought the ball down. At that point, the play has developed and Romo either has to throw the ball away or make something happen "outside of the play." I don't think you can blame an offensive lineman at that point. If a QB chooses to extend a play rather than throwing it away, the lineman gets a pass from me. It's not necessarily about how much time elapsed -- because not that much time had elapsed -- it's about whether the play itself had developed.
In any event, I don't think this play was any indication that Colombo isn't fully recovered from his injury.
3. On the third sack, Colombo got beat and he can't do that. But there's something interesting going on here.
It's a 3 receiver set. (Roy on the left; Miles and Crayton on the right; Witten off left tackle). The ball is on the 25 yard line. It's 3rd and 18 -- we need to get to about the 6 yard line to get a first down. Both Austin and Crayton, who are side by side on the right, run go routes literally into the endzone. These routes are intended to clear out defenders for Witten who's running a post route from the left side.
If Romo throws it on time, he has a chance to hit Witten. But at the last minute, he decides to pull down and dump off to Felix. I wonder why he didn't just let it rip to Witten. Unfortunately it's hard to see if he's covered, but based on what you can see it doesn't seem that he would be covered.
To me, it seems like a case of Tony being too conservative. I kinda wish he would have just let it rip to Witten. But once he pulls it down and goes for the dump off, the defender gets him from behind.

At this stage, the Cowboys aren't game planning for their opponents. I assume this means that Romo isn't watching much film of the opposition.
If Romo isn't so well versed on the opposition's defensive tendencies, it would seem only natural that his decision making process would be a few ticks slower than it'll be once the normal game planning and film study sessions are in place.

Here's a good perspective. The older players just don't rebound as quickly. This is the time when soreness just doesn't leave as quickly for the older group of lineman. Compound that with the drain that old injuries bring, with getting back into a game dominating schedule, unlike the single practice focus. Well, even veterans need to get into something of an adjustment going from the exhibition period to regular season.
There doesn't seem to even be an ouce of panic in the coaching staff. You know, the guys there evaluating tendencies and degrees in their own players game to game as well as year to year. Since the scout department takes time before and during camp to evaluate each of their own players, I'm going to rest my own posterior and not worry about that sky falling quite yet.

My thoughts from the Saturday practice:
*The media had a chance to meet with Wade Phillips before the afternoon practice in Oxnard. There were several things that Phillips said that were interesting, but the one I want to focus on is when he spoke of how well wide receiver Jesse Holley was playing on special teams.
Phillips is trying to tell us something here. This staff is seriously looking into replacing Sam Hurd with Holley and he is planting that seed to be ready when it happens.
Receivers coach Ray Sherman also had high praise for Holley after the morning practice, saying that Holley’s work on the practice squad and scout team in 2009 prepared him for this opportunity.
Do the Cowboys feel that Holley has more upside as a receiver than Hurd? Or is the fact that Holley will make about $1.5 million dollars less than Hurd put him on this roster for “playing well on special teams?”
Holley has been good on teams and he has lined up in some roles that Hurd normally plays. Despite the fact that Hurd had a productive game against the Raiders as a receiver, this still might not be enough to save his job.
*It had to be nice for the defensive staff to once again have linebacker Sean Lee on the field for practice.
Lee will be called on to play the all-important role of the nickel linebacker on this defense and the time he missed would have put him way behind. Do not feel like this is a case at all. In studying Lee, I thought he moved around well. When the squad went to team drills, in pass coverage other than one rep where he allowed a receiver to cross inside and behind him, he was solid on his responsibilities.
There is a lot to like about Lee, but there are two areas that really stand out to me.
One, Lee is always working for the perfect play. You can see that football is important to him through his effort and preparation. It bothered Lee that he made that mistake in coverage but on the next opportunity, although the ball did not come his way, he was able to maintain position in the route and put himself in good shape if it did.
For a rookie in the defense, Lee knows his assignments and those of the other linebackers. In pre-snap, Felix Jones motioned right to left outside the formation, Lee was there to point Jason Williams to bump outside and pick up the coverage. Here was a rookie having the awareness to make a defensive adjustment to keep the coverage intact.
Smart football players will always get a chance to make plays on Sundays.
*The backup offensive linemen update: Offensive tackle Sam Young has outplayed Robert Brewster so far in camp and this doesn’t surprise me at all given Young’s college background.
This is not to say that Brewster is a throwaway, but there is plenty of work that needs to be done, maybe even a move inside to guard might be in the works.
Young started off this camp with the offensive coaches wanting him to do a better job of coming off the ball. He has made some progress in this area. Young is not pretty technique wise but his effort has been good to try and finish blocks.
Center Phil Costa does not have your classic body build for the position, but I have been impressed with the way he has battled inside, which has allowed the coaches to move Travis Bright from center to guard.
Costa is a short-armed player, which can be trouble. You need to have that ability to get defenders off your body and especially at center where you are one-handed anyways.
Bright is a powerful guy, but it looks like he is more comfortable at the guard than as the center. Montrae Holland returned to practice and didn’t seem to have any further problems with the hamstring.
Still have a feeling that the Cowboys will carry 10 offensive linemen this season. My guess is your five starters, Barron, Holland, Brewster, Young and Costa.

I think something that is being overlooked is that Romo held on to the ball because he wasn't able to step up in the pocket. Those sacks had a lot of different causes working at the same time.gimmesix;3497643 said:

I think ten linemen, looking forward from the age and status in this year's group, could be a wise choice as well. I like your group of: Barron, Holland, Brewster, Young, and Costa as well. There would be a place for two linemen on the practice squad as well. I would add to that a linebacker, tight end, wide receiver, and defensive back. They probably grab a running back from some source as well.

Alex Barron is a natural LT who needs to get stronger. He's probably not going to give you the pop that Colombo has given in the running game. Also, he will struggle with inside power moves like Broaddus has stated.
Dallas looks like they are married to Colombo this year, and if he continues to have "technique" problems against those faster, quicker guys, Romo is going to take some more sacks and hits this year. It could get ugly in some games for Colombo, imo, if Dallas isn't careful.
I think Dallas is going to have to really be conscious of helping Colombo out against those faster, quicker guys. That means leaving a RB or TE in to help him out. That could make it tough, imo. Free is going to need some help, from time to time. Protection is going to have to be slid his way some. The pressure is going to be coming up the middle like always, too.
I'd keep using the screens to the RBs and WRs, and I'd continue to focus on getting the ball out of Tony Romo's hand faster.
Two TE sets would probably be a good idea. Moving Romo around would help, too.
Running the football 30 times per game would be a good idea and would protect the offensive line. I'd make sure Felix Jones got enough touches and give Barber and Choice the leftovers. I'd use the running backs and wouldn't get too spread and pass happy. If Colombo can't block his guy, Dallas could struggle in 3 WR sets. Those 3 WR sets should give Felix Jones more space, too.
I think Roy Williams has trouble getting separation at the number 2. That isn't even up for debate, imo. I think Dez Bryant could beat man-to-man coverage and give Romo an open option and YAC yards. Bryant could help Romo get the ball out quicker. Austin gives Romo a quick option and YAC yards, too.
Get the ball to your four most explosive offensive players:
Felix Jones
Miles Austin
Jason Witten
Dez Bryant
That is just my opinion.
