When I actually started writing down players that could (1) either be potentially very good back-ups in the NFL, and (2) players who would possibly make very good 3rd down/scat backs in the NFL, I was really surprised by the depth at this position.

Outside of 1st round RBs, here are some specific players by round who may serve our needs well. (I am assuming DMAC, Mendenhall, Stewart, F Jones, R Rice, among a couple other are ALREADY gone. This really is a deep class.)

Our 2nd Round Pick - Players who could serve as the number 2 back
J Charles, Texas
M Forte, Tulane
T Choice, Georgia Tech
S Slaton, WVU

At Our 3rd Round Pick
K Smith, Central Florida
M Hart, Michigan

At Our 4th Round Pick
Thomas Brown, Georgia
A Patrick, Oklahoma

At Our 5th Round Pick - more scat back or number 3 RB types
J Forsett, Cal
C Boyd, S Carolina

At Our 6th Round Pick (via swap with Miami)
R Little, Kentucky
BenJarvus Green-Ellis, Ole Miss
A Alridge, Houston

At Our 7th Round Pick/UDFA
Xavier Omon, NW Missouri State

Feel free to add more names.

But the bigger picture is that there appear to be SO many RBs in this Draft outside of Round 1 who may be able to get the job done for us. I'm not saying we shouldn't take a RB in Round 1, but rather if we don't, I'm not particulary worried.

Round 2 looks particulary interesting to me, as do Round 5 and 6, when players start to slip.

You obviously did some good research on this. Did you notice if any of the later round guys excelled at punt returns?

I could see us taking 2 RB's out of this years class. Maybe 1 on the first day and one in the later rounds.

I think there's a good possibility Ray Rice could fall to us in the 2nd. If Maurice Jones Drew dropped to 28 in the 2nd round I believe. Rice was more productive in college than Drew but Drew had the better combine and was seen as more versatile. I think size and the amount of carries Rice was given in college could push him down some and I certainly wouldn't be surprised to see him still there in the middle of the 2nd round so it's not a stretch to say he could last to the late pick. Historically speaking on average its about the 6th RB taken that we'll have a shot at.

McFadden, Mendehall, Stewart are three guys. After that it's kind of hard to guess who will follow in what order. But there are three guys who I would look for at the end of the second round. Ray Rice, Chris Johnson and Matt Forte. Now sure one or two of them may go before our pick but with Felix Jones and Jammal Charles figuring to be drafted in the second as well I think there's a good chance at least two of the three I mentioned would be available.

Choice wouldn't be a bad selection but I recall hearing about some injury troubles, maybe a torn knee ligament, that kind of scares me off. He certainly has skills though.

Good list and good post!

.

I dont think Felix Jones or Rice will be 1st rd picks, I think both will be 2nd rounders...Chris Johnson will probably also be a 2nd rd pick...not really sure if all of the guys you listed as 2nd rounders will go there either, some might go round 3 or maybe even 4

honestly if we didnt trade up for McFadden I see little reason to spend an early pick on a RB...I like Choice for late 2nd or early 3rd, and on day two I'd like Thomas Brown...another late rd sleeper is Georgia's Kregg Lumpkin, big physical kid with very good hands...was hurt quite a bit and lost in the shuffle last yr in a very talented UGA backfield

Chris Johnson - not draftable?

I thought that he would definitely be gone by our 2nd round pick.

I agree, I think Jones and Rice will more likely be 2nd round picks, but more early or mid round than late 2nd rounders (i.e., I didn't think they would fall to us with our 2nd round pick).

It would be amazing if either R Rice or C Johnson fell to our 2nd. That would be ideal.

I'm thinking that more than likely Forte will be there at least. I have a feeling that C Johnson will go early to mid 2nd round, and similarly to R Rice.

But we can always hope . . . .

I though that A Alridge would be intereting on STs. Small, quick and fast.

Another 6th-UDFA RB who can also return kicks and play the slot:

Danny Woodhead Chadron St 5'8 200 4.37

*3x D2 All-American; led the nation in rushing in 2006 w/2700+ yards and 34 TDs_currently holds record for most career yards, all divisions

Move back up as needed in the 2nd round to get Rice and be done with it ...alot cheaper than going after Dmac

Rice.

If we don't go RB in round 1 and he's still there at the start of the 2nd... then we need to do whatever we need to and move up to the early part of the second and nab Rice.

He'd be great teamed with Barber, IMO.

We could go CB (Jenkins), WR (Hardy or Jackson), then Rice. That would be a NICE first two rounds.
