you get amstel lite? why would you **** with a decent lager? the only light beer we get over here is coors which in fairness is ok but certainly not what i would choose to drink. they did try and market bud lite but nobody drank it so they stopped selling it. lite beer is one thing i've never understood to be honest. carb wise unless you're drinking a hell of a lot its not as if you're going to get fat from your beer and you're just sacrificing taste and drinking piss water. not a fan of american beers in general to be fair though sam adams is good as is the texan one thats name escapes me at the moment. the germans probably have the best lagers in my opinion.

I'm guessing you are speaking of Shiner Bock. It has German ancestry. Amstel Light isn't that bad. Of course, I'm not sure I've ever seen regular Amstel here in the states.

There are many other good beers / ales here in the states. Most are from microbreweries. The big guys try to make them too to compete in that market, but mostly fail. (Anheuser Busch created Amber Bock to compete with Shiner Bock, but it sucks something fierce)

I also like Kronenbourg1664. The ads for it in England are funny. They say, what if Napoleon had won at Waterloo, Buckingham Palace would be a casino, poodle races etc but at least you would still have Kronenbourg1664.

There is some small justification for lite beers in much of the US. They are like Pilsners, only more so, for drinking when the temps hit the high 90s and 100s. Summer beers. Of course, I understand from my Aussie acquaintences, they just put ice in their beer in the summer.

Still, imo, most of them are nasty, and most would not be legally entitled to call themselves 'beer' in Germany.

There are too many good beers to waste your time drinking bad ones, and the exploration is worth it, just by itself.

Top 5 selling? My guess would be:

Molson Canadian
Labatt's Blue
Budweiser
Coors
Corona

I drink some Canadian beer: Big Rock, Unibroue, some European: Stella, Guinness, Boddington's, Newcastle. Then there are the microbrews that are locally available which vary across the country - can get some decent stuff. We don't get many American microbrews up here so I can't comment on any of them. The odd day I might get something like a Kingfisher, Tsing Tao or Sapporo when I'm eating out "ethnic".

Big love for the Unibroue ... that's one hell of a brewery

Maudite and Blaise Chambly are two of my favourites.

There really isn't much of a market for that stuff up here in Canada but it appears as though it makes up a big chunk of the US market with Bud Lite, Coors Lite and Miller Lite being big sellers. Why do people drink this stuff? I could understand maybe a designated driver wanting one drink and choosing a Lite beer but some people drink several.

Is it so you can drink more while consuming less alcohol overall?

Its a scam. A marketing ploy.

I think they said something like... if you have one light beer and 3 or 4 pretzels you are right where you would be with a regular beer.

People will believe anything. No, people WANT to believe EVERYTHING.

reminds me of the Applebee's ad where the guys are excited over having a 550 calorie main course while having a huge beer which probably has 1000 calories

Yuengling>>>any canadian beer

Highly doubt it, but I haven't tasted any of their beer, nor have I tasted all Canadian beer. I've tasted enough good Canadian beers to say that there probably isn't a beer that would be ">>>" than my favourites.

Anyhow, the Europeans got us all beat. The stuff that makes it to our shores isn't nearly as good as the fresh stuff over there that hasn't had to travel across the ocean.
