Something I've never seen...

Really? I wanna see that again! Just shear dominance.

You can thank Free Agency for that!

Those teams had great offense and great defense but they never had the 2007 Patriots offense or 2000 Ravens defense in terms of being just that great.

I've never seen, nor will we ever likely see, a team that has an offense that dominate coupled with a defense that dominate at the same time.

It would cost way to much money to be able to field a team that great on both sides of the ball. It would be fun to watch but I doubt we'll ever see something that great.

Pretty sure the 2001 Rams were tops in offense and defense.

They were #1 in total offense and points scored.

However, they were #3 in total defense and #7 in points allowed.

You are about to see that offense for NE again this year.

Why was I thinking the same thing? :D

Man... those were the days until JJones screwed it up. And he is lucky we won in '95 when the players took the team in their own hands and basically let Switzer coach himself. I could even venture to say we would have won until 96... yup 5 straight! Shoulda, coulda, woulda...:banghead:

if you blame JJ for the bad you gotta praise him for the good

A 2000 Balitmore Ravens defense with a 2007 Patriots offense. That would be amazing to watch. The Pats had a good defense in 07 but nothing spectacular. They had their fair share of flaws. The Ravens have always had a knock out defense but always a piss poor offense. I've always wondered if a team could combine the two. It's possible.

Do you think our team could become that? The reports I've heard sounds like our offense could become very potent. Not 07 Patriots potent, but sounds like with Romo spreading the ball around and the running attack this team can put points up in a hurry. All the powerhouse defenses have always have average to below average offenses. IE:Steelers.

BTW..Has there ever been a team with a juggernaut offense and defense? I didn't start watching football till I was about 7 or 8. Which was around 1995-96 and I've yet to see it.

San Francisco 94-95
Dallas Cowboys 92-93
San Francisco 89-90
Pittsburgh Steelers 78-79
Dallas Cowboys 77-78

you really should just stop watching football altogether.

What makes you think he ever watched it to begin with? I wish there was a way to block the quoted people on an ignore list. I know there are a huge number of complete ******** in the world, I don't need to see them quoted to remind me of the fact.

those teams might've had the rankings but they never had a team like the one Slate is talking about. no team will ever be like that because the 07 Pats scored so much you will never have a defense like the 2000 Ravens if you're offense scores that much.

Quite possibly. But they won't have a defense that compares to the Ravens 2000 squad to go with it. And that's what Slate is refering to.

Having an offensive unit that dominate along with a defensive unit that dominate at the same time.

If a team could put something like that together there is a good shot you could see a team go undefeated again, possibly even for more than one season with units that dominate the game that much.

Which is why it will likely never happen.

What does that mean? If an offense is a #1 or #2, why can't the defense be the same?

What does the offense scoring tons of points have to do with the defense not allowing points?

The problem is that in some ways having a dominant offense makes things more difficult on the defense. Take the 2007 Pats for example. They made big plays down the field quite often. That's great and all, but it also meant that the offense scored so quickly that the defense had to get back on the field without much rest. Scoring quickly gives the other team more possessions in a game, hurting your defense's total numbers.

Having a dominant defense can also hurt in some ways. Sure your offense gets good field position and can score some points. But of the other team isn't scoring, then your offense probably isn't flinging the ball down field. They're more likely trying to run down the clock with a slow, methodical offense.

are you serious? It's not just "an offense" it's one of the greatest of all time and a scoring machine. the more it scores the more the defense is gonna have to go out and defend. they're offense isn't a ball control scoring team like the 90s Dallas team for the most part. the Pats are a big play offense and they don't let up(like when they scored a td on us with 20 seconds left in 07). also with the salary cap you will not be able to field a team like that anyways.

Edit: the post above mine explains it too.

That's true. But there were times when their defense got beaten up pretty bad. When they went on that run to go undefeated you always heard "well if you could just keep the ball out of Bradys hand and pound the defense.."

Ok...well, I guess I have to play Madden to figure this out.
