He said on the radio that leg injuries in camp is because players in the offseason work out in normal athletic shoes. He said the reason for leg injuries like hamstrings and groin pulls happen because in camp they use cleats and they are a lot harder on the legs. The players are not used to them. He said in his days they worked out in the offseason using cleats.

Think there is anything to what he said?

Never heard this and don't see how that makes sense.

here's a guess ; the cleats drag and grip the turf and are heavier
just grasping at straws I wouldn't know

I once changed my workout routine by simply switching my shoes to a pair of Vibram Five Fingers. My legs cramped within the first hundred yards upon wearing them.
It took me two weeks to get acclimated to those shoes. It was a severe and unexpected transition period, but now I'll never go back to regular shoes. I love 'em.

I can see how something changing the way you work your feet can make injuries and other stresses happen in a highly athletic, competitive environment

I believe that's true. Why wouldn't the trainers know that?

LOL. After the indoor college volleyball season(shoes)I would come back down here and switch to beach VB and no shoes. Always a first week of leg pain. Now you all have me wondering if it was the change to no shoes. LOL.

Cleats are pretty light these days, so I'm sure weight is not the issue. It has to be with the way the cleats grip significantly more than regular athletic shoes, which puts added strain on joints when sprinting and planting. I'm sure something can be attributed to that.

Cleats are harder to run in and they put additional strain on you legs, anyone can test that theory by throwing a pair on and trying to run sprints. It's always recommended to ease your way into wearing them and working out in them.

I know it can create muscle strains or stress fractures but I'm not sure if the increase of knee injuries van also be attributed to it.

Your on the right track here.

with so much artificial turf anymore, why use cleats at all? Or better yet design artificial surfaces so you don't need cleats, which with some is the case now.

You still need cleats on the turf fields that they play on. They simulate grass so you still need to dig in - so to speak - to get any grip.

Perhaps. But, I tend to believe that trainers understand this.

I know we started to see a lot more hamstring pulls in baseball...when the steroid era came into effect. Guys would never try to stretch a single into a double...mainly because they were afraid of pulling a hammy.

Funny he said this as I just heard our own Randy White say the exact same thing a little while ago. His is a theory, but he said they would lift weights in cleats and the Cowboys should try it.

My bet is quads being worked out disproportionally to hamstrings, causing a strength imbalance. That or we just have a microscope on our injuries ignoring the rest of the league, combined with some bum luck

Yes, I heard that interview, too...on SIRIUS, I think. I, too, remember thinking he may be onto something with that theory.

Interesting. The Chinese have some shoes that are very difficult to walk in initially. I like what @Corso mentioned.

This would make sense only if a player never wore cleats.

It also would suggest that you should see more injuries in the start of the off-season from players working out in athletic shoes.

Microscope and some guys who are just injury prone.
