Sooo Jimmy purposely tanked the 1-15 so he could get draft picks

This is a bit overblown but essentially true.

Jimmy planned all along to get the extra conditional picks. He knew that 1990 team was awful and he wasn't trying to win a couple of games at the expense of multiple draft picks. The trade happened in season around Halloween.

But it should also be noted we sent not just Herschel but 4 draft picks ourselves one of which became a pretty good player in Jake Reed.

And also that Issac Holt actually did start for us all year the following season or 2 but most of those guys did not ever start regularly anywhere else.

The other guys weren't really good enough to be long term starters and Jimmy/Lynn knew that.

All in all it was major fleecing because the sheer number of high draft picks just hasn't been equaled. It was insanely poor management skills by Mike Lynn.

I'm in the middle of reading "boys will be boys". according to the book, the cowboys sent Walker, a 3rd, 10th in 1990, and a 3rd in '91 for Minnesota's RB Nelson, LBs Solomon, Howard, CB Holt, DE Stewart. They were assigned conditional picks Nelson ('91's 2nd), LBs solomon ('90's 1st), Howard ('91's 1st), CB Holt ('92's 2nd & 3rd), DE Stewart ('90 2nd).

Was watching NFL Network and they've been running back to back Top 10 stuff.

One was the Top 10 worst teams in history. I think the Cowboys 1-15 season was #8.

One of the things Jimmy mentioned was that even tho the players in the trade were better than the players on the field, he purposely sat them so they wouldn't meet the conditions tied to the picks. He wanted the picks.

Some of you might have already known that, but I didn't. Thought that was interesting.

Jimmy holds godlike status in my mind so this is merely water under a big beautiful bridge.

I remember the trade well. It was even said in many media outlets that Jimmy and Jerry got fleeced, calling them out for not knowing enough about the NFL and trading their only star player.

It was always Jimmy's intent to keep the picks. Those players from Minnesota were has-beens. No way Jimmy was going to keep them at the expense of a 1st or 2nd round draft choice attached to them.

Guess Jerry and Jimmy got the last laugh. :lmao:

Thanks for the breakdown; it's been a while since I've seen it.

That was a pretty amazing deal.
