Right tackle would save $7 million if he's a post June 1 cut. If the Cowboys release Free and , the Cowboys would have $9 million more to play with under the league's $123 million salary cap.

However, a source said Free's status with the Cowboys, as of now, is secure.

Free took a step back in his development in 2012, but there is a belief that he can improve to give the Cowboys two solid tackles who can protect for the future.

If the Dallas Cowboys plan on making any moves in free agency, more space must be cleared as they're only roughly $175,000 under the salary cap right now.

This could change if the Cowboys believe there's a tackle worthy of selecting in the first two rounds of the draft. If that's the case, Free could be sent packing and or the draft pick would become the starter at right tackle.

If the kid from Bama (Fluker?) is there at 18 the Cowboys have to take him.

Even if you designate him a post June 1 cut, the cap hit doesn't go away until then...correct?

If that's the case, then I'm not surprised.

I've been trying to say this; they are holding this trump card for when/if they need or want to use it.

The greater benefit it to wait and see how the FA market and especially the draft unfold.

Apparently the best they could do in FA is Jake Long's jock strap. It will have to be the draft.

This. Why the heck would you do it now? May as well wait and see what happens. I realize most people are like a closed hospital but they are doing the right thing here.

Calvin Watkins is a joke. Free won't be a Cowboy in 2013.

Right. At least that how I understand it. If we were to cut Free today and designate him a June 1 cut, then it would have ZERO impact on our cap today.

We would not gain a cent until June 1. At that time, we would then gain some money back on our cap. I think it would be 4M with 3M of dead money. But then we'd also have something like 6M in dead money on the 2014 cap, but save another 2M (8M salary if kept).

Contract: Signed a four-year, $32 million contract. The deal contains $17 million guaranteed, including a $10.3 million signing bonus. 2013: $7 million, 2014-2016: $8 million, 2017: Free Agent

So there is no reason at all to cut him right now unless we took the entire 9M in dead money right now. That would make no sense since it would cost us 2M more to cut than to keep.

The only reason for not waiting is to do the player a favor by giving him more time to find a new team. Personally, I don't think Doug free has earned that favor. 17M in guarantees is more than enough of a FAVOR if you ask me.

If that was so we would cut him now and designate him a june 1st cut like we did with spears

Why wait, I know he won't gain any room now but why wait till June. Just cut him and get it over with. Useless either way.

If he is on the roster next season that it is proof that we are not serious about winning.

If they were definitely keeping Free, then they would have restructured his contract.

As indicated in a previous post, there is Zero benefit to the team in cutting him now as a designated June 1st cut.

The media knows Cowboys fans are dumb and will take this and run with it.

What has changed? Free is a June cut... which means his status i secure for now. Have fun with that.:bang2:
