Source: Free Doesn’t Think He’ll Stay With Cowboys

Too bad he knows he's in the driver's seat and gets paid no matter what.

If we cut Free before the regular season starts, he doesn't get another nickel until some team signs him. He will have to compete with whomever else is out there for his next contract, which will not be nearly as lucrative as the one he currently has.

He has no leverage at all. In my opinion, the Cowboys are doing him a huge favor by offering to keep him on the roster under a reduced contract.

His greatest fear should be that the Cowboys actually keep him on the roster until the final cuts. Then, good luck landing a decent contract. If the Cowboys can handle the cap situation, that is exactly what they should do, if Free does not agree to a contract reduction.

I want Free to reimburse me for hair transplant surgery from where I pulled out my hair watching him get burned over and over. Don't get me wrong. I'd like to see him starting next season ... for the Toronto Argonauts. Just cut him. He was awful.

I would not be celebrating just yet fellas, this might be a negotiation ploy by Free. Maybe he is playing it cool, hoping all the OTs get signed and Dallas is stuck with Free or nothing. Then Free could negotiate a better restructure, says he will take a 40% pay cut instead of a 60% pay cut for example.

I have been involved in a lot of negotiation talks in business, and stipulations that one side says they will never agree to surprisingly find themselves in the final agreement more times than not.

Now I am not saying we should keep Free, he sucks and there is no arguing that. All I am saying is this might be a negotiation tatic by Free and at the 11th hour he caves and accepts the pay cut the Cowboys are offering.

For weeks there have been errant reports regarding Dallas “offering’’ these players. Truth is, there has been “touching-base’’ contact in large part because, the Cowboys personnel department tells me, none of those guys are major upgrades over Free.
I'd like Romo's opinion on this.

Free knows the deal as does his agent.

Dallas has no reason to cut him early and make his life easier since they don't get any cap relief until June 2nd anyway.

Free is the one whose feet are held to the fire. He absolutely wants a pay check and a starting job this year. Dallas has a starting right tackle job for the leagues most visible franchise. A good year here and a guy could clean up in free agency next year.

Dallas would like to keep Free around as a swing OT with a chance to compete for the RT gig in TC. But they are only doing that if the price is right. And with Winston and others coming in around 3-4m that has to be the going rate for a starting RT.

Dallas doesn't need to negotiate with guys yet. We understand the basics of salary as Eric Winston himself told us all. 3-4m. The negotiation is only for length of contract and guaranteed money.

Agents know Dallas will pay someone 3-4m to be their RT. It is leverage for them now and they can take the actual cash in June if they can't get better offers.

The whipping boys will be the same. OL and S. until proven otherwise wrong..

Wash.Rinse.Repeat. The saga of bad contracts continues..In 2 years, Romo will be asked to take a pay cut...

The option with the highest risk, but highest reward is to cut Free and don't sign a vet but go with a journeyman swing tackle and start Parnell. If neither Smith nor Parnell gets hurt, then you save a boatload of cap room and your OL doesn't suffer at all. If we don't get a sure fire starter who can start over Parnell, we might as well go that route unless we can get a vet cheap. You can't pay backups to be starters. It is a waste of cap space. Free must take the reduced salary or get gone. JMHO.
