After three more weeks of consideration, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is leaning more toward undergoing a Mumford procedure on his left clavicle than attaching a plate over the mending collarbone, according to a source.

The Mumford procedure is where a portion of the distal clavicle is shaved off or removed.

Romo, however, has yet to make a final decision on the type of surgery he will have in March as he continues to gather facts and evaluate the benefits of each procedure that he's discussed with doctors.

"We don't have a final [decision]," Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said Tuesday morning from the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis. "

Mumford procedure rehab protocol
General considerations
  • Do not elevate surgical arm above 70° in any plane for the first 4 weeks post-op
  • Do not lift any objects over 5 pounds with the surgical arm for the first 6 weeks
  • Avoid excessive reaching and external/internal rotation for the first 6 weeks
  • Ice shoulder 3 - 5 times (15 minutes each time) per day to control swelling and inflammation
  • An arm sling is used for 4 weeks post-op
  • Maintain good upright shoulder girdle posture at all times and especially during sling use
  • MD follow-up visits at Day 1, Day 14 with nurse for suture removal, Month 1, Month 3, and Year 1 Post-op

Alexander, thank you for this info. It is what makes CZ the best site for Boys info on the web. I came up with my own protocol; we'll call it the Tony protocol in honor of Romo and lil' ol' me.

* Stop making it a habit of landing on your side and rolling with a 300 lb lineman on top of you.

It is a much quicker healing process than the Mumford Procedure and more effective as well.

No, but I don't think you want to wait too long and push the rehab into June.

I agree
But another couple weeks shouldn't cause that
Should be able to throw by June that way based on what I've read

Well think it over, Tony. Ruminate long and hard, and when YOU decide, let us know.
Or . . . here's an idea. ASK WHAT THE DOCTORS THINK!!!! Yes, sometimes doctors know better than jocks.

The proverbial fast train is slowly coming to the end of the rickety track ... with Witten, Romo and Ware I'll always look back thinking what could have been if there was really a Texas football attitude over ruling the many distractions that polluted the awesome football culture which once defined your Dallas Cowboys, instead of the short bus.

If any physicians on the Zone, or Zoners who may have stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night, can explain if this procedure will make it harder for him to refracture the clavicle, it would be greatly appreciated. The metal plate procedure seems far more invasive but may provide more "protection" to the thrice broken left clavicle.

Any insight would be appreciated.

Well, if we say it's a 3 month recovery, if he has surgery on March 1, he can't throw until June 1. So another couple of weeks puts us mid-June. Not that that's the end of the world, but I think everyone would be better off if he's ready before then.

Anyone familiar with this procedure care to shed some light on if/how this reduces the risk of future injury? @Doc50

I think he should just let it heal naturally. he would be ready to practice sooner.

The Mumford procedure is typically used for surgical management of chronic acromio-clavicular impingement syndrome; this creates space in the AC joint at the lateral or distal aspect of the clavicle, thereby alleviating chronic pressure and pain.

In Tony's case, this procedure would be used to create a zone of movement for the distal clavical, whereupon compression of that structure from blunt force trauma to the lateral shoulder would allow movement before contacting and compressing the clavicle. This has the potential to lessen the risk of fracture, though that would still be possible.

If the recent fracture site is now showing signs of solid union, and the bone in that area is now predictably thicker than before, there may be no need for installation of any internal fixation device. The Mumford is done arthroscopically, and is fairly common and uncomplicated.

It's his body, he should get to decide, and I think this is a reasonable option. He should be good to go in 3 mos.
