If he goes with the claws option it might make DB's think twice about running back a pick.
If any physicians on the Zone, or Zoners who may have stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night, can explain if this procedure will make it harder for him to refracture the clavicle, it would be greatly appreciated. The metal plate procedure seems far more invasive but may provide more "protection" to the thrice broken left clavicle.
Any insight would be appreciated.
The Mumford procedure is typically used for surgical management of chronic acromio-clavicular impingement syndrome; this creates space in the AC joint at the lateral or distal aspect of the clavicle, thereby alleviating chronic pressure and pain.
In Tony's case, this procedure would be used to create a zone of movement for the distal clavical, whereupon compression of that structure from blunt force trauma to the lateral shoulder would allow movement before contacting and compressing the clavicle. This has the potential to lessen the risk of fracture, though that would still be possible.
If the recent fracture site is now showing signs of solid union, and the bone in that area is now predictably thicker than before, there may be no need for installation of any internal fixation device. The Mumford is done arthroscopically, and is fairly common and uncomplicated.
It's his body, he should get to decide, and I think this is a reasonable option. He should be good to go in 3 mos.
What's taking so long?
It's all good.
Carson Wentz will need the reps during OTA's.
all these injuries to all these players makes me nervous about next season not sure they will be ready.
A lot of teams are going through the same thing. This is the time of the year where players are getting different procedures done and rehabbing after the long season. Luke Kuechly, for example, played lights out all season but he just got surgery as well. It happens...worry about it if a lot of vets aren't participating in OTAs because of it.
I haven't been a huge proponent of drafting a QB, but looking at Romo's situation he's probably closer to done than I previously thought. That collarbone didn't heal right.
True but QB is the most important position in the game... Plus you owe him 20 + mil next year.. Injury history and getting up in age.
I doubt that Tony's clavicle will have any bearing on when he retires. Keep in mind, this procedure is not a desperation measure, it's not a joint disorder, and it's not his throwing arm. He will not be behind or out of shape at TC.
After three more weeks of consideration, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is leaning more toward undergoing a Mumford procedure on his left clavicle than attaching a plate over the mending collarbone, according to a source.
The Mumford procedure is where a portion of the distal clavicle is shaved off or removed.
Romo, however, has yet to make a final decision on the type of surgery he will have in March as he continues to gather facts and evaluate the benefits of each procedure that he's discussed with doctors.
"We don't have a final [decision]," Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said Tuesday morning from the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis. "
