Compensating for the plantar fascia he battled for much of this season, New York quarterback Eli Manning has developed a stress reaction in his right foot that could be even more problematic for the Giants, according to sources close to the situation.

A recent MRI on Manning's foot revealed the stress reaction in the cuboid bone, which makes Manning susceptible to a stress fracture that could end his 2009 season.

Before any stress fracture develops, the Giants are aggressively treating the stress reaction, trying to get Manning to stay off it as much as possible, having him wear extra supportive shoes, and using a bone stimulator on the injured area.

For now, the stress reaction is not enough to sideline Manning. But there have been times when Manning has been spotted favoring the foot, which he was doing as recently as Thursday night, when he was spotted limping at times.

After consulting with other foot specialists in recent weeks, the Giants are not surprised -- they had come to expect that the plantar fasciitis could lead to the stress reaction.

Manning was able to play Thursday night at Denver, where he completed 24-of-40 passes for 230 yards and one interception during the Giants' 26-6 loss to the Broncos.

More than anything, the stress reaction provides another glimpse as to what Manning has had to endure this season. He started the season with plantar fasciitis, later injured his plantar fascia, and then developed a stress reaction in his foot. It is hardly the only reason for his recent struggles, but it certainly has not helped.

The Giants believe Manning is recovered from the plantar fasciitis and it no longer is an issue.

Even with the stress reaction, the Giants have been in compliance on the NFL's injury report, continually listing Manning with a "foot" injury.

Wow, I have been struggling with my plantar and all of the side affects for about 3 years, I am sure that I don't get the same type treatment as Eli does, but I feel his pain.

my left foot has a stress injury that could lead to fracture. it feels like a butter knife going inbetween the bones and just sitting there. walking is out of the question without a lot of agony when it's going on.

i had it, saw a doc and put it in a walking boot for a week, it got better, i took the boot off and it got hurt again (how i'll never know on either occurance) the day before thanksgiving. so i woke up wed am to find i still couldn't walk and had to cancel my trip to see my family in florida cause walking to the restroom was killing me and breaking me down to wanna cry.

and i can usually deal with pain - i've got (2) heel spurs on the back of my heel and when they hurt, you know pain.

in any event, i feel for eli. that's very painful and he will have to stay off of it for it to get any better at all. all there is to it.

Just heard it on Mike Francesa's show. They say they may shut him down soon. If we beat them Sunday that will speed up the process.

I thought they were talking about his emotional condition leading up to facing our pass rush. Ware, Rat and Spencer will give him a stress reaction.

Well, this pretty much does it for the Giants' season. Unless David Carr acts like Tom Brady when he came in for Bledsoe.

Okay, season is done.

There's no amount of rehabilitation, drugs, surgery, or time that can fix this:

Before I opened this thread, I thought it referred to a mental condition.

Excuse for what? The Giants' poor play? They have already publicly stated that they are not playing well. There haven't been excuses made at all. Whether Eli stays in or not, the Giants are not making the playoffs. They know it and they know it is due to poor play by the O and D lines but especially the OLine. O'Hara and Snee have made it clear they know this is on them and they don't know how to fix it.
