Smart move on Colombos part to take it. He will still be just barely over 30, still several good years left, and by then would be able to prove that he is not an injury worry. Then he could make some big bucks.

sounds about right. didn't the Saints offer the same to Jon Stinchcomb? Very similar players and careers.

I don't think he was saying he took it....

I assumed they would offer a 3-4 year contract. Two is kinda short. You can give the guy a 4 year contract and make it essentially a 2 year contract. If I were him, I'd sign a 1 year contract and prove the world that 2006 wasn't a fluke, and rake in major money in 2008.

Again, I think this was the initial negotiation, he didn't like it so he's seeing if someone will give him better. really, the longer he's on the market, the more likely he'll be back.

I think the length of the deal is irrelevant. all deals in the NFL can be terminated at the team's whim. Length tells you more about the bonus money. A short deal will usually have a tiny SB -- there is no need to spread the bonus over several years. I'd expect the deal was for a small bonus (like 2 mill) with a small salary for year 1 and a 3-4 mill salary for year 2. In that context, it would be practically a year to year thing.

I don't think Columbo is going to have to make significant compromises versus what this years FA OL are getting. He may not average $7mil per year for 7 years but I doubt it'll be significantly different than that. $6mil average for 4 years as a for instance.

I think we're dreaming to think that his past knee injury will make him a significant market exception because he proved his ability & health this past year.

And yet I truly hope I am wrong.

Oh I know it is all about the signing bonus but I thought that was understood so I just mentioned the length...but I am sure if it was a 2 year deal with a 50 mil signing bonus he would have taken it

Lavar Arrington saw what can happen to you if you ask for alot of money, more than teams in the 1st stages of free agency are willing to pay

he ended up getting an incentive-laden deal, less than what he was originally asking for, got hurt, and then got cut

If they offered him a $2 million dollar bonus and a $5-6 million in base salary over 2 years, he should have laughed in their faces.

That'd be about 3.5 to 4 mill a year. I wouldn't be shocked - that's about what Stichcomb got money-wise - more in bonus though
